Zara

Tuesday, July 27th, 2010

I came down to Cape Town today to take family portraits for some very special friends of mine. Their new little one is called Zara and she is just the cutest little thing ever!!! She reminds me of the baby from Ice age. So lovely to be here i must say although quite chilly compared to Durbs! This is a quick snap i took of her today. I look forward to our “proper shoot” and will be sure to blog the results.

Katy and Michael’s Shabby Chic Wedding at Beaver Creek Coffee Estate near Port Edward

Monday, July 26th, 2010

Katy and Michael’s magical day was one of those weddings which re affirmed all the reasons why i enjoy photographing weddings. You see I have been doing alot of self introspection recently to work out what exactly it is that makes me tick as a creative. I am an artist … I am a photographer …. sometimes i combine the two and sometimes i photograph weddings mostly i photograph people. I love photographing weddings as I love capturing all the emotions in between moments which tell beautiful narratives, I love people and I love people watching and a camera allows me to do that without any guilt, I love taking portraits and making pictures which somehow tell the viewer what type of person is in the photo, I love being able to be fully me when i take pictures (it’s rather nice not having an art director telling you which angle to shoot from), I love meeting new people and making them happy with a visual story which is truly unique to them and to me. I will never be a sausage factory photographer … it goes against every grain of who i am! I would rather eat my shoes than do bendy back bride photos …. !

Katy and Michael’s wedding was a visual feast filled with beautiful people. There wasn’t one bit of sausage factory in their whole day ….. their wedding was truly unique, truly creative and the air was thick with love! Being able to glide through all the atmosphere, all the special details, all the smiles, hugs, kisses and Katy’s Birthday flowers was just a treat! It was a loooooong day as we drove down to Port Edward from Durban at 6.00am and after a breakfast started working straight away but even still …. I didn’t want to leave the reception as i was loving all the loving!!

The Botha family

Friday, July 23rd, 2010

Taryn Botha will always be Taryn Van Wyk to me even though she married Ryan Botha ages ago!!! We went to high school together many moons past, in fact it is so many moons ago that when i realised that we have known each other for 19 years today, i nearly fell over! Taz is one of those lovely people who is always smiling and sweet, and her husband, Ryan is pretty much the same. As for their little one Keegan …. So dam cute but man can this little guy run!!!! The last time i photographed him he had just been born and wouldn’t wake up ….. (the time before that he was still in mommy’s tum!) definitely not that still these days.

Michelle and Kelvin’s big day at Collisheen

Tuesday, July 13th, 2010

When i think back to Michelle and Kelvin’s big day i think of her crystal clear blue eyes and Kelvin’s very cheeky smile and sense of humor! Although they are both South African they live in London, so there were lots of emails sent between us before we officially met. Michelle made it clear in all her mails that she didn’t want any cheesy wedding photographs. I am a person who prefers my parmesan in my pasta and hates the typical “jumping shot, bendy back bride, spraying of champagne” wedding photography that often gets churned out so I was delighted to have a client with similar sentiments!!! I knew then that i would get on with Michelle and i wasn’t wrong! Michelle and Kelvin were a great couple to shoot, so laid back and on a mission to really enjoy their big day which is just as it should be! Michelle and Kelvin got married at Collisheen Estate close to Ballito, north of Durban who are extremely efficient and made the organisation of their wedding that much easier from afar.

Indonesian Inspiration

Friday, July 9th, 2010

This year has been a very big one for me work wise. The 14 hour days run into weeks without weekends off these days. I do so enjoy my job but have been thinking of ways to restructure my business and to set up systems so i can have more down time. I think i will always be one of those hard working folk as i have alot of passion and drive behind what i do and feel lucky to have a job which i love (and one which seldom has me stuck in traffic!!!) Whilst having all these thoughts my boyfriend Stu rang to say that he had just been invited to a wedding in Bali next year and that i would of course be coming along. This got me EXTREMELY excited. I have been lucky enough to travel to many countries in my life … Mexico, Laos, India, Maldives, Cambodia, Oz, Europe, Guatemala and so on … but Indo has to be without a doubt my favorite!!! So i am taking a little trip down memory lane …..!!!! If there is one thing i love more than photography it is traveling and when i can combine the two well …. that is just heaven!!!!!!

Naval and Stacy’s beach elopement

Wednesday, July 7th, 2010

Naval and Stacy came out to South Africa from the States for the world cup football and … to get married!!!!  They had a beautiful intimate ceremony on Salmon Bay Beach with just themselves, a minister and videographer (oh and myself of course) By defying all tradition I am sure they saved loads of money and were able to seriously splash out on the honeymoon. I must say, after seeing so many stressed out brides, irritated mom in laws and grooms just about to run away before the big day, this really doesn’t seem like a bad idea at all!!!

Kate and Jaco’s spectacular day in Hilton

Friday, July 2nd, 2010

Before i even met Kate i knew that i was going to love her as all her emails emitted such a lovely warmth. This warmth was echoed throughout their wonderful wedding day. Kate and Jaco live in Nigeria far far away from Hilton where they got married so the organisation and planning of this wedding was a real family affair. Both sides of the family have a beautiful closeness and love for each other which i found so special, and they welcomed me into their lives for the day like I had been there forever. Kate and Jaco got married at St Annes and went on to celebrate their union at the amazing reception venue Folly Hill. I so enjoyed photographing this lovely wedding.
