Vintage Farm Wedding in Creighton KZN – Roxy + Dale
Dale grew up on a dairy farm far away from the big city …. Roxy on the other hand spent most of her life living in the heart of big cities!
Roxy loves shoes, shopping and manicures, and Dale loves the great outdoors, rock climbing and insects. The one thing they do have in common is that they both love a good adventure. They love their families, they love traveling, the love romance, they love God and they love each other. They also love a good project …..
And boy did they set themselves up with a good project when they decided to get married on the Hutton Family Farm in Creighton. With a whole heap of help from family and friends they converted an old sheep barn into a chapel and an old calf barn into the reception hall. Roxy, has a wonderful sense of style and is an avid blogger so it follows that she had a very clear vision of how everything should be. She dreamt up a pastel tangerine colour theme, vintage plates, handmade tables and a cappuccino bar … stormy downpours however weren’t on the agenda!
The day before the wedding the heavens came down …… it pelted down …. it was that crazy kind of rain where you can’t see your hand in front of your face. But when everyone woke up to their special day the sun peeked through the clouds and eventually painted the sky blue. And everything was perfect ….
Roxy and Dale thanks so much for picking me … it was wonderful to jump into your land. We really enjoyed our time with you deep in the countryside!

In the Brides own words ….. over to Roxy Hutton!!
Dale grew up on a dairy farm in the little town of Creighton, Northern Kwazulu-Natal. As soon as we got engaged and visited his family on the farm, we tossed around the then crazy idea of using the {very much in use} shed and barn as our venue. The very impractical idea very soon became a reality when both Dales parents jumped on board and prep began….the first step, what to do with the calves when calving season would begin in September (3 weeks before the wedding!). Dale and his Dad hand made all the tables, a home was soon made up for the resident barn owl, and the cows soon had a place to sleep! Then the real work really began…
Second Shooter: Natasha Schoeman
Hair: I had Makeup Your Mind (http://www.makeupyourmind.co.za/) do my hair and makeup, as well as my bridesmaids. They were fantastic. They came out all the way from Durbs, I had a fantastic trial run a few weeks before, and they were wide awake and ready for our 5 am start. Alana and Genna were our stylists, and both were just so lovely! My makeup and hair looked fantastic, and lasted the entire wedding, I even had pretty hair for the first day of my Honeymoon…bonus!
Church flowers, bouquets and button holes: I was very lucky to have two fantastic local ladies do all my flowers for me,including my bouquet, Gail and Renae, you are fantastic! If any brides out there plan on getting married in the Creighton/Underberg area, you wont find any one better than these two lovely ladies!
Flowers were from Midlands Flower Hub (http://www.mfh.co.za/index.html) Catherine who runs the florist was absolutely fantastic, and made all my dreams of a pastel colored bouquet come true, even when pastel colored flowers are so hard to come by in September.
The groomsmen all had gorgeous (ahem, I mean very ‘masculine’) corsages whipped up for me by a very dear creative friend, Nadia from CupCake Couture (http://www.lovecupcakecouture.co.za/) who captured exactly what I was after. She is wonderful to work with and also can help with any other creative elements you may be after.
Decor/Flowers at the Venue:
All done by Gail and Renae (two lovely local lasses with oodles of talent and experience in flowers! Gaill can be contacted through her and her hubby’s birding website here http://www.buttonbirding.com/
Brides Dress:
Hand made by Cathy Hutton (082 826 0056) in Pietermaritzburg. I met Cathy at a coffee shop, armed with an iPad full of Pinterest images, she took 10 minutes to look through them all, and then proceeded to draw my dream dress on a paper napkin! It was everything i wanted: simple, lacy and a little bit sexy
Brides Veil: made by Cathy Hutton as above
Bridesmaids Dress: 2 and a half were from Forever New, the other 2 were made by Cathy Hutton (above). I say half, as we used the third dress I had originally bought and cut it up to use on the other 2 dresses, a rather expensive piece of material, but such is life. Buying all the dresses for your bridesmaids without them actually being present can be a real gamble!
Groom’s Suit: Suit Yourself in Durban (http://www.suityourself.co.za/) we’re a pleasure to deal with, and very reasonable. For a farmboy, Dale really pulled off a gold suit well
Wedding Coordinator: Me, myself and I! Oh and the help of lots and lots of wedding blogs like The Pretty Blog, Style Me Pretty and Pinterest
Wedding Decor: This was all outsourced by myself. Dale and I really didn’t want any draping, overlays or organza anywhere near our wedding (not that there is anything wrong with the above) but its just not what floats our boat, and I set about wanting to create something pretty, practical, creative with a hint of vintage, all rolled into one that really complemented the natural beauty of our venue. This meant no table overlays, and hours and hours of manual labour on behalf of Dale and his Dad to make each and every single one of the tables
good bonding time I’d say!
Chairs were hired from Exclusive Hire in Durban (http://www.exclusivehire.co.za/home.htm) who were fantastic and very reasonable. There was no way I could see any other type of chair fitting into out venue other than Tiffany chairs, and luckily Exclusive Hire had 160 of them, in mahogany, and were able to deliver them to our remote corner of the globe!
Cutlery, plates, napkins and champagne glasses hailed from the city of gold, Johannesburg. Paula, who owns A Vintage Affair (http://www.avintageaffair.co.za/index.php) had loads of great ideas and a whole studio filled with pretty bits and pieces for hire. Luckily my mom lives in Joburg and very graciously (some would say crazily) offered to bring them all the way to Creighton for us! They were perfect and added such a lovely feel to the tables. Thank you Paula for letting us take your precious pieces all the way to the Farm!
Candles were from Rent a Candle (http://www.rentacandle.co.za/scripts/WebStorePub.dll/ListProducts?SortBy=PropChar2&cbPropChar3=9&PageName=ListProducts9) in Joburg. Again, my super wonder mom, armed with a 4×4 and trailer, transported them safely! Dawn, candle extraordinaire, was amazing, and put together 100 candles of various heights and sizes to create the romantic atmosphere we were after in The Barn. Thank you Dawn!
Food: For Dale and myself, this was probably one of the most important things for our wedding (apart from having a fantastic photographer that is!) after spending hours on the Internet searching for ’boutique caterers’ in Durban, I was referred to Sarah Harris (074 183 8745) from Harris and Homes catering (http://www.harrisandhomes.com/). All I can say is that Dale and I stuffed our faces silly and had the best food we have ever seen or eaten at a function…ever! And, Sarah was wonderful to deal with the entire time! We had canapé starters, a never ending buffet table, and a candy bar/dessert station that would make Willy Wonka’s mouth drool.

I cannot believe this. I had to drop my daughter Odette off at this wedding and, not knowing the area, thought I’d find something to do nearby. Alas, Creighton was not that kinda town, so I drove to Underberg, looked at the mountains, bought the Sunday paper and drove back to the wedding. I found an unobtrusive tree, parked under it and attempted to read the paper. Attempted, I add, because the next thing this photographer came out near my car, and shrinking into my carseat to remain unobserved, I was mesmerised and I could see that this photographer was an expert! Boy, were you having fun. I couldn’t see what it was that you were photographing, because you were behind the tree, and on the ground, and aiming for shoes, but I just knew that these photos were going to be special. This morning I got the link to check out the photos and I was right – these photos are the BEST I’ve ever ever seen. The sad part to this story – a few years ago I saw you on Top Billing, and contacted you to present workshops in Johannesburg. Unfortunately this never took place and I was very sorry, but have always kept your name in a special place for the future. If I had known it was THE JACKI BRUNIQUEL that I have always so greatly admired, I would have jumped out of the car and not tried to blend in with the seat – I would have shouted from the car roof that I have just met someone whose work I always follow and have always admired – I am so sorry I did not have the courage to introduce myself to one of my SA heroes – your work deserves a medal!! I live with the hope of meeting you one day, I’m not even going to say keep up the good work because I know your work is impeccable, hope to meet you one day soon. I have to be your biggest fan!!

My eyes are filled with tears at the beauty of these wedding photographs. i don’t even know these people but the way in which Jacki has captured the delicacy and refinement of the vintage decor with the robust masculinity of farmlife in this magnificent countryside is totally magical.
