Cape St Francis Resort Wedding – Chio + Gumby

There are some weddings which are just about impossible to put into words, and Chio and Gumby’s wedding is definitely one of those. I have been going to Cape St Francis on holiday with my family since I was a tiny tot, and this little town has become my soft place to land, and also a place where I have learnt some hard truths, but ulitmately it sits deep in my soul, coated in a plethora of happy memories, milestones and personal growth. Shooting this wedding was quite surreal, as every time I turned my head there was a special person from my past, or smile from someone that I still hold close. The 1st of February touched me deeply, that is for sure!

I have known Chio and Gumby for many years. In fact, it is hard for me to imagine Cape St Francis without Gumby in it, or JBay without the Kraaks! It is a special place, a place with it’s own smell, light and energy. It is no wonder then, that they decided to settle and build their dream family home there. They live nestled amongst the fynbos just a short walk away from some of the best waves that this country has to offer. The lifestyle of Cape St Francis AKA Seal Point, suits these two and their two very gorgeous boys perfectly, as they are both hippies at heart who love the ocean, the earth and nature. You couldn’t meet nicer people ….. their house is always open to friends, and they are the type of folk, that even if years have passed between visits, it’s like no time has passed at all when you see them again.

It was a huge honor to be asked to photograph their big day, as with a powerhouse Mom like Cheron Kraak, I knew it would be an incredible wedding. Cheron absolutely adores her children, and wanted only the very best for Chio on her wedding day. There was no ways that these two were going to be having elaborate balls of roses on their tables and chandeliers strung onto the ceiling, their main concern was that they would be able to have a huge party with all of their loved ones and that “everyone would have a jol”. Cheryl Steadman (their good friend and wedding planner) and Cheron, took Chio and Gumby’s vision of creating a no fuss, woodstock festival themed wedding and made it into a reality. It wasn’t a small wedding by any means with well over 300 people attending, but there was a warmth and atmosphere of love that so often eludes huge weddings. I just loved all the touches from Bali, the simplicity of the decor, their oh so sweet wedding cartoon designed by the famous Stephen Bibb, the absolutely brilliant speeches, the incredible band (honestly the best I have heard at any wedding EVER!) but most of all I loved watching the pure joy emanating from both the happy couple and all of the guests. They didn’t want millions of posed pictures … they wanted the day captured in all it’s truth. I truly hope that my images tell this beautiful story as eloquently as it unfolded!

It was a magical day and I feel very blessed to have been a part of it and count these two as friends. Thanks so much for picking me!!!!

PS You may notice the groom hopping along on crutches. All weddings seem to have their pre wedding dramas and this one definitely had its own accident drama! So glad your leg is healing Gumby, and that you were such a trooper on the wedding day despite the physical set backs!!!

PPS Huge thanks to my very talented brother in law Tyrone Bradley for photographing the groom and his buddies in the morning. I so appreciate the favor and all the hard work. You rock!
