Tropical Oyster Box Wedding – Gemma + Calum

Whenever I take on new clients I ask them about what type of photography they are drawn to and Gemma is a girl who understands design. She spoke to me about line, composition and tone, and this is a language I love and understand! There aren’t many people who can explain why they like certain photographs but she is an interior designer and knows exactly what she likes! And she loves clean lines, an editorial look, emotional photos and punchy compositions with strong dynamic lighting. She also absolutely adores her Calum and he adores her!

Gemma and Calum are rather different in many ways. Gemma’s dream is to work at Vogue while Calum is a fan of old Land Rovers and would love to be an archaeologist. He is also known for his “fondness” of Lord of the Rings and the Hobbit. Gemma is most definitely a fashionista and I nearly stole a pair of trousers off her during one of our meetings! The two of them however have found a common love of travel, adventure and the bush. They are also very close to their families and have a super tight group of friends. You can find them these days living in London with the common dream to see as much of the world as possible.

Gemma and Calum thanks so much for picking me to be your photographer at the fabulous Oyster Box Hotel. Your tropical wedding was absolutely beautiful but for me, the most touching part about it was the heart felt vows you said to each other. Thank you for entrusting me with your memories.

And now for a few words from the Bride

Calum and I were so lucky to have had a great team of professionals for our day. This team was so easily picked thanks to the sound advice of our wedding co-ordinator Ginny. But, to start our story off at the beginning we have to start with Jax… Calum and I begun our wedding planning as we were preparing to move to London, which meant that the location for the wedding changed a few times.

Yes, a venue is a very important aspect of the wedding, but to us there were two things that were higher on our priority list: The Photographer and The Dress. I must have browsed through close to a hundred photographers’ websites and I actually did try on 100 dresses. Needless to say, I take these two things quite seriously!

One beautiful morning I was amidst my usual routine of drinking coffee and scrolling through Pinterest when the universe caught my attention with this image of a bride in all her glowing glory. Following the link to most certainly end up pining over some famous photographer a world away, and bam! There she was. A South African photographer from Durban with the most amazing wedding photographs I’d ever seen. We booked Jax before we booked or even decided on anything wedding related. We literally would’ve changed the whole wedding so long as we had her. The rest was simple, except for the dress which we’ll get back to in a sec!

From the moment my parents viewed the Oyster Box and met Ginny it all fell into place. Sue captured my vision from the first email and made me feel so secure and special. Drew was great fun and gave me many pearls of wisdom for the actual day and oh my how gorgeous the hair styles were. Laura was a magician with the many faces she glamorized and one of the sweetest humans ever. Nicole’s cake satisfied every taste bud in the room, not just a good-looking cake! Vivian is such a gentleman and played the exact right songs for the exact right moments, it must be a super power.

So, all the suppliers in the bag and still no dress! Everything I tried on just didn’t cut it and we were getting alarmingly close to having no time left. I was determined to find a gown in London so that I could see it in person and have all my necessary fittings, but again the universe just kept pushing me toward this other divine human being. I’d been shown Casey’s work when we had just gotten
engaged, but we already knew we were going to be in London so I didn’t pursue it. Then Casey was mentioned once more by Ginny, but I was only at 25 dresses so still thought I’d find the one. Then it was the end of October. Wedding only 5 months away and I started to panic. I emailed Casey, pleading with her to please save me and to not hate me for giving her so little time and she graciously accepted. I emailed her my measurements and let her know that I’d be in SA for a week the following month and she actually whipped up the dress lining for me to try! My insane black lining; one of the many features that just makes me crazy happy. I next saw my dress a week before the wedding and I never once felt anxious about it. It made me feel incredible and I loved every fitting.

The lead up to the wedding was filled with so much excitement and it is still a bit surreal that it has already happened, but we will never forget it. It was everything. Thank you again to everyone and a special thank you to you, Jax and Liz, you can never know how much we appreciate you and your talent!
