Goan Engagement Shoot – Raj and Parrot Entangled in India – Tash + Neil

Wednesday, April 18th, 2012

This is the engagement story of two of my most favorite humans on this planet.

Tash is my wonderful assistant and friend. A women who I love, admire and respect for being such a special person. She is always laughing, always smiling always caring.

We went out to India to photograph the wedding of Shane and Laurie and took a few extra days to explore Goa. Her long time boyfriend decided to come out to join us. One day whilst Neil and I were swimming in the warm calm Indian ocean on Palolem beach he told me that he had brought along a ring destined for Tash’s left hand. It took him a few days to actually pop the question (which was rather hard for me as I am not good at keeping secrets!) And when he did, he did it on a pretty Goan beach at sunset. I have never seen a bigger smile nor a happier face. Tash was literally walking on air!

You may ask why I have entitled this blogpost Raj and Parrot Entangled in India. Well .. I have nicknames for most of the people who I adore. Before arriving in India Tash had her hair dyed purple, turquoise and black. The Indian folk just loved her. Wherever we went we heard people saying (Please imagine this with Indian accent and head wobble at the end) I really really like your hair you look like a (insert either one of these birds) peacock, kingfisher, parrot. Parrot just stuck. Tash’s hairdresser would make a bloody killing in India. As for Raj … well Neil looks like a Bollywood actor and does such a fine rendition of one It just stuck. As for the entangled bit …. well ….. they are rather fond of each other!!!!

Love you both …… And yes I will be shooting their wedding!

Nutcracker Christmas themed Engagement Shoot – Natalie + Matt

Friday, April 13th, 2012

Natalie is a huge fan of Christmas, her name actually means Christmas so when Matt proposed he did it on Christmas day on Christmas hill! Using a Christmas theme was therefore perfect for their engagement shoot. Both Natalie and Matt are super creative and so we wanted to do something really arty and unique. I called in my insanely talented friend Drew Christie of Evolve Salons to do the styling and the idea to use a Nutcracker theme was born. Huge thanks to everyone involved and especially to the fabulous couple for giving me the opportunity to make something really different!

Cape St Francis Engagement Shoot – Kat + Garrick

Tuesday, April 10th, 2012

I have always felt like my soul has had a good scrub after a few days in Cape St Francis. It’s my special place, my soul place .. the place with the unique fynbos smell that sends my mind, body and spirit into instant relax mode. Cape St Francis also known as Seal Point also happens to be one of my favorite waves in the world. So …. when Garrick contacted me about shooting their wedding in PE my mind immediately thought about the fact that PE is just an hour away from Seals and that I would naturally have to extend my stay by a day or two. Then I discovered that Garrick is a surfer and that he asked Kat to marry him in St Francis Bay and that was that! Kat and Garrick’s engagement shoot just had to be done there. I have always wanted to do a portrait shoot down in that part of the world and they were the perfect couple for it.

Thanks to the two of you for being the perfect couple for this shoot!!! (that is really the highest compliment from me by the way) We loved our time with you and we loved our time in Seals! Happy Honeymooning!

Between the sheets and onto the beach Engagement Shoot – Kirsten + Luke

Tuesday, April 10th, 2012

Kirsten saw an engagement shoot I did a while back and the intimacy captured in those pics resonated with her. I don’t ordinarily repeat themes for my shoots but she felt that there was something about using a bed as a location that would communicate the closeness that exists between her and Luke. As long as my photographs communicate feelings and emotions I am happy and so…. Off to bed we went! From the bed we rolled on over to the beach.

These two are just so sexy and sassy and full of fun. They have a wonderful energy between them which is hard to put into words …. But hopefully my pictures do the job.  Here are a few from our shoot.

Looking forward to your wedding in May. Not long now guys!

Vida Cafe/ Playboy bunny Engagement Shoot – Jane + Nick

Wednesday, February 1st, 2012

One of the first things I ask my clients, is how they met.

Jane was sick as a dog and at home feeling sorry for herself whilst her brother was outside having a braai and lots of fun. Nick had had a terrible day at work and was invited along to this very braai. He knocked on the door and sick Jane was there to open it. The rest is history!

These two are so full of life! The are both Entrepreneurial with a capital E and seriously live their brands. Nick and his partners have the master shares of Vida Cafe in Durban (and that is where they had their first date!) He is also the sole distributer for Playboy Energy drink throughout Africa. Jane is a personal trainer AKA GI Jane and has a great pink studio in Durban North.

I just know their wedding is going to be an explosion of purple awesomeness and lots of bling and quirk. You guys have been so much fun to work with. Thanks for picking me!!

Airport/ Beachside Engagement shoot – Janlyn + Grant

Friday, January 27th, 2012

When I first met Janlyn and Grant they were doing the long distance thing and spending quite a bit of time in aeroplanes! Although Janlyn is originally from Durban she was working up in Jozi and Grant was based down here in Durban. They both live in Joburg now, but Grant is an Umhlanga boy through and through and loves the beach. We therefore decided use two themes for their engagement shoot …… the airport and the beach! Unfortunately King Shaka airport proved rather hard to get permission to shoot in, so we used Virginia airport instead. I personally think it worked out just fine. I am looking forward to their wedding at Zulu Nyala in May this year. Thanks for picking me guys.

Deep in the City – Emma + Murray’s Engagement Shoot

Wednesday, January 25th, 2012

Emma and Murray are both city folk, they love the energy of the city and the bright lights and recently moved from Cape Town to Joburg. Em works in advertising and Murray in finance. When they first suggested a city themed engagement shoot in Durban I had to remind them that the center of Durbs leans more toward the Delhi big city vibe rather than a New York big city vibe. Well I put my thinking cap on and off we went to a big city parking lot right in the center of town. The other request they had was for everything to be in black and white! Now that is a first for me!

Thanks for picking me guys!! Looking forward to your wedding at Netherwood later on this year!

Haibo Engagement shoot – Abby + Grant

Wednesday, January 25th, 2012

When I asked Abby to describe her and Grant as a couple she said … “well I like round and he likes square, we’re opposites in many ways but we’re a typical Joburg couple who like to socilise in nice restaurants, work hard, keep fit and drink yummy wine” They popped down to Durbs over the Christmas break and I took them to Durban’s new hotspot, Haibo for a bottle of Diemersfontein Pinotage and a few snaps! Here are a few favorites from our shoot. They are getting married at Netherwood in March this year, one of my best venues! Thanks for picking me guys!!!

Vintage Farmyard Engagement shoot with a miniature horse – Nicola + Pete

Wednesday, December 14th, 2011

I like to do engagement shoots which are themed around the couples in them. Nicola is a horsey girl and both her and Pete are super stylish and love to dress up. It seemed obvious from the start that we would have to involve her beautiful chestnut thoroughbred, Demi. Then she mentioned something about a little miniature horse called Wonderboy, and I was sold. The shoot just had to be at the stables and the miniature horse just had to make an appearance!

Nicola is a big fan of arty photos and themed fashion shoots so I called on the ridiculously talented Drew Christie of Evolve salon and brilliant make up artist Lyndsay Nixon and we put our heads together to come up with a Vintage Farmyard Themed shoot with an artsy twist. I just love working with Drew and Lindsay, if you are looking for a hairdresser or make up artist … these two are  so bloody brilliant! I also want to mention that Grant Davidson of Herr clothing designed and made the neck piece, scarf, pants and amazing jacket Pete is wearing. Oh I am too lucky to have some talented people in my world!!

Now I want a miniature horse more than ever!!!!!!!!!
