Forest Themed Netherwood Wedding – Isa + Beyers

Friday, March 2nd, 2012

We still have quite a bit of time on our hands before 2012 is over but I am convinced that Isa and Beyer’s Netherwood wedding will still be party of the year when 2013 rolls in! It was a fun wedding with lots of laughter and langarming!! (in case you don’t know what that is the langarm is, it’s a particular dance which is very much part of Afrikaans culture) Afrikaans boys (well at this wedding anyway) sure do know how to dance!!!!!!!!!! Love it!

The décor just blew me away too. Netherwood was filled with orchids for their big day which remind me of my late Grandpa and are very special to me. Besides the gorgeous orchids, the wedding had a rustic forest theme, incredible food, great music and wonderful vibrant guests. Beyers and Isa were just so easy to work with too. Without being a total gush … it was a photographers dream wedding to shoot. I am touching wood and feeling very lucky as all the weddings I have shot this year have been that way!

Thanks guys for picking me, we loved shooting your special day

How breaking the habit of biting my nails improved my life and helped my career!

Wednesday, August 17th, 2011

At at a time when I was really low I picked up a random book sitting on the shelf at a friend’s house. It was one of those self-help jobs with a hideous cover (you know the ones)

It said something to the effect of “if you carry on doing things the way you always have, expect to receive the same as you always have”

This moved me.

A lot.

Candice and Dave’s million dollar rockstar wedding at the Breakers Hotel Umhlanga. Part One

Wednesday, March 30th, 2011

I have been seriously excited to blog this post as there is something really amazing about photographing a friends wedding. In my experience the pics just land up having an honesty and an edge to them which must be attributed to there being a mutual understanding and comfort between subject and photographer.  Dave and Cands are both musicians, super people and fabulous subjects!!  If you haven’t already seen their engagement pics, head right over by clicking here. These two seem to call everyone they like or admire rockstars but they were the true rockstars of this day! I worked pretty darn hard on this wedding but it was soooo worth it, and I do hope I did this special day justice. Due to the fact that I took like a trillion pics …. I am dividing this little love fest into two blog posts starting with all the morning prep here in Part One. Enjoy! PS As this wedding was held in Umhlanga and that the boys surf we had to start off with some surf action, the boys got ready at Candice and Dave’s flat and the girls preened at The Breakers Hotel where they had their reception.

Behind the Scenes of H O L L Y ‘ S album cover shoot

Thursday, March 3rd, 2011

I have been working with the fabulous young singer Holly for a while now and am super excited about our last shoot which we did for her second album cover. We shot at the Docklands Hotel on Sunday afternoon and if you look at all these behind the scenes photos you might get an idea of why I get a wee stiff after shoots! All the photos of me were taken by my super assistant Natasha who is going to start taking some pics at weddings with me which I am stoked about! We had some crazy deadlines and one heck of a timeline for this shoot but everyone seems to have pulled it all together. I am excited to blog the results but here are some behind the scenes for now!

Before and After …. a bit of retouching

Wednesday, December 15th, 2010

I am a perfectionist to my own detriment at times!! And when it comes to editing and retouching I am a huge perfectionist. My family is constantly berating me for the amount of time i spend in front of the computer, but I am much more about delivering a quality product rather then mass producing or becoming a photo factory. Often my clients don’t understand when I tell them that a one and a half hour shoot can sometimes result in 5 hours of retouching, processing, burning DVDs, then there is running to the lab for prints and so on and so forth. Anyway I thought today i would show you an image that has been edited and then the image as it was as a RAW file.

Wartberg Wanderings … portraits of a couple of farming families

Monday, December 13th, 2010

I have always loved being spontaneous, picking up my backpack and heading off to some unknown destination on a whim. I love meeting new people and experiencing new places. Unfortunately with all this growing up business, I don’t really get to do much of that anymore (sob sob! ha ha) So when Nicci called me to enquire whether i would come up to Wartberg to do some family portraits for herself and her friend Kerry, my interest was tickled. I mean … where on earth is Wartberg??? A place i haven’t been to in South Africa! Yaaay! Both families are farming familes which made it all the more interesting for me. I love taking in a bit of someone else’s life. First up we have the Erskines and then the Wichmann’s. And in case you don’t know where Wartberg is …. its in the middle of the farmlands somewhere inland from Tongaat! Thanks so much to both families for such a lovely time. You live in such a gorgeous part of the world!!! We really had fun!

Amanda and Adrian’s intimate safari wedding

Friday, December 10th, 2010

Amanda and Adrian got married at the gorgeous luxury game lodge Leopard Mountain in far Northern Kwa-Zulu Natal. Their wedding was small and intimate with only close friends and family who had flown in from all over the world (one guest even came all the way from Iceland!) Adrian is South African but has been living abroad for many many years, first in the UK and then in Canada. Amanda is English and also moved out to Canada some time back. This is where they both met , fell in love and now live together. These two are definitely the no fuss fun types, they love the great outdoors, sports, exercising and more sport! Amanda in particular has a huge love for animals and that is part of the reason they chose to get married on a game farm. I am always up for a weekend away and a new adventure so I jumped at the chance to photograph this wedding and what a lovely wedding it was. I was given very strict instructions that they wanted mainly documentary style pics capturing the day and nothing too posed. (my best!) I do so love relaxed weddings. Noreen from Timeless Weddings planned this whole affair
