I could hardly move the day after this wedding.
I can hardly move the day after most weddings but this was next level! I was hobbling around like one of those comrades marathon runners post race! Everything hurt!
Zama and Ben’s traditional Zulu wedding was an absolutely mind blowing experience and deserve every single squat. I’m sure you can tell from these pictures that it was an action packed day that thrilled the senses. The singing, the dancing, the brilliant colours and the fascinating rituals had me on my toes and sometimes on my tummy! I literally didn’t stop clicking the whole day!
This was a story that deserved focus.
An Australian groom with Scottish roots marries a South African Zulu bride in KZN.
These are the kinds of weddings that keep me excited about my job!
People from all over the world and all over South Africa descended on the Khuzwayo home in Umhlanga where they transformed their beautiful garden and a park across from their house into a wedding venue for 500 guests! Guests adjourned themselves with colourful outfits and the bridal party changed 3 times! The air was filled with singing and drumming and ululating and everyone left with a full tummy. And I do have to mention the party! These guys know how to shake it!!!
But let me rewind a bit. Zama and Ben were colleagues at work. Ben had come to South Africa to work on the same project as Zama and they hit it off. Both of them love the outdoors with a splash of adventure and so she played tour guide and they spent their weekends together bathed in the beauty that is South Africa. They forged a strong friendship and when Ben had to leave to return to his home country – they realized that they didn’t want to be without each other. What followed was a long distance relationship and eventually Zama immigrated to Australia where they both now live.
Ben and family graciously navigated the traditions and customs involved in marrying a zulu bride and these two became one in February 2019. A month that will forever be entrenched in their hearts and all who attended this beautiful ceremony.
Ben and Zama thank you so much for picking me to capture these special memories! I am truly honored and feel blessed with the whole experience.
Huge thanks to Alexsandra Wiciel for coming to shoot this memorable day with us. You are an absolute peach and I adore you! You’re also damn fine at what you do. What a talent!
