Creative portrait shoot- Guy Buttery photographed by top South African wedding and portrait photographer, Jacki Bruniquel in KZN indigenous forest.

Guy Buttery

Having worked with many photographers around the world, Jacki Bruniquel is quite unlike anyone I’ve met wielding a camera. She has an unbelievable ability to ease whoever she is pointing a lense at. This is not something she has strived for but something which comes incredibly naturally to her. Her enthusiasm for each project and the overall joy in her work is tangible and makes each time more memorable than the last. Not only does she approach each shoot with more vigour than your local barista, she can literally turn a blank canvas into an incredible ornate and detailed artwork. Jacki is quite simply a world class artist of epic proportions!

Many of the works Jacki has created for me have been used on billboards and posters around the globe. They have been placed in successful proposals and adverts as well as flyers and posters from New York to New Zealand. They are always met with the same response, “Who took those incredible photographs”

Jax is as much a visionary as she is a photographer. No two shoots with her are ever alike. She has a brilliant eye for catching the moment in any setup.

Jacki is a visionary!

It was very hard finding a photographer who would capture beautiful moments as well as shoot in perfect lighting and edit the images correctly – then I found Jacki. She ticked every box. She goes above and beyond to really find out who you are and how you would like your images captured.

Her images are filled with passion, meaning and remind you of a perfect moment in time. That paired with an amazing fine art background her images are artistically perfect.

Portrait of a mom by top South African photographer Jacki Bruniquel

Jacki is an artist, she sees beauty that others simply do not see.

I am a forty something stay at home mom and wanted a photoshoot for myself of myself. For this I thought, I needed someone open minded and patient. But I found more than that in Jacki’s work – every photo she took was breathtaking. Not only did she make me feel comfortable in my own skin, but she managed in a special way to catch the very essence of me.

Shortly after, we did a family shoot with Jacki, which I thought would be challenging given the very strong and different personalities involved between my husband, 10 year old twins and I. But once again the result exceeded every expectation! She managed to create beautiful & fascinating images of us all. From beach, to forest and even an abandoned building became a beautiful backdrop for our unique shoot.

Jax is simply the best photographer I know of. And the quality of her work is worth every cent

She has a real artist’s eye. I loved the fact that she was never afraid to get dirty or get herself into a funny position so she could get a unique shot. She excels at creating natural images and she is so imaginative when it comes to using whatever is at hand to create something breathtaking. She is a genuinely beautiful soul and I cannot imagine documenting my life without her

Grandson with his 90 year old Gran

Jacki doesnt ‘take pictures’ – she has a conversation with the most immediate and fully realised part of you – she unearths something that we can’t see in oursleves. Her mediums are light, conversation, and empathy – and somehow she captures the intimacy between people – and the intimate within ourselves.

This portrait is of my 93year old grandmother (gogo) and I. Gogo is notorious for hiding from a camera, there are a few rare images in our family albums where she is not hiding behind her hands. Gogo is my best friend, my greatest teacher, and such an inspiring woman – who has held together a family on her own after her mother, father and husband died tragically in one year. She raised my mother and her sister and two brothers on her own – she never remarried – she never went on another date. She dedicated her life to us.
When I eventually convinced Gogo to have her portrait taken with Jacki, in the late afternoon light, as the shoot was almost over Gogo asked: “so when you taking the pictures?”  Jacki responded: “Gogo we are done” – Gogo didn’t even notice Jacki taking them – they were so deep in conversation and in a playful exchange, we all lost track of the shoot. Jacki is deeply empathetic, and very observant, she notices everything, and has this grace and gently capacity to stay closely attuned to what you are saying, and what is not being said. She sculpts these invisible materials into her photographs and into her portraits.
