My sister has a guest lodge called Swell Eco Lodge Wild Coast which is situated in Mdumbi in the Transkei. About 5 years ago I spent some down time there taking portraits of the locals. We went to visit her last week and before we went down I printed out all the pics I had taken so many years before. One afternoon we went on a mission to find all the people in the images and give them their photo.I have included the before and after pics in this series, it quite amazing to see how faces change through the years and how some don’t change at all!
Thanks to Riaan for being flash bitch 🙂

I love this – not only are the photos amazing but you have a told a story through both of the images. You have given these people an heirloom for their family forever!
Lovely Jacki all so serious . beautiful Love them.
That’s lovely Jacki. I’m sure they were thrilled.
These are absolutely beautiful! Was it hard to find many of the locals, had any left, or passed away? What were their immediate reactions on seeing their original portraits? These portraits are so rich in colour, depth and emotion.
Such moving photos Jacki – you have captured the essence of these people so well. Especially like the thread woven through the pics of the items being held. So enjoy seeing your beautiful work. Have you come across the photos of a NZ photographer Marti Friedlander, now well in her 80’s? I think you would enjoy some of her photos taken over a lifetime.
Incredible! !
