Unstuck-Yourself-Creative-Photography-Workshop-Jacki-Bruniquel-001-764

Today I will also tell you about the workshops that happened here in Durban at my home this summer. We had 17 wonderful souls attend on two separate days. Some had been in business for years, some had just started out, some had flown in especially for the workshop and some lived down the road. We had people from Nambia, Zambia, the UK and Salt Rock. One thing they all had in common is that they found themselves nodding to the following questions and they came to the workshop for a creative reboot.

Unstuck-Yourself-Creative-Photography-Workshop-Jacki-Bruniquel-050-484

If you find yourself relating to what I am about to ask you then this workshop is designed especially for you too!

Are you

  • feeling like you are stuck in a rut when it comes to your photography?
  • struggling with the immensity of maintaining creativity whilst running your own business?
  • terrified of putting your prices up, meaning that you are taking on so much work that you don’t have a moment for yourself or your family?
  •  fearful of shooting in tricky lighting situations and messy rooms?
  • feeling burnt out and uninspired?

Do you

  • feel afraid to push your own boundaries and try new things?
  •  find yourself blindly following trends for the sake of it?
  • find that your flash gives you anxiety?
  • feel like your work sucks and that this is causing you to feel inadequate?

My aim with this workshop is to help you move past any fear based mindsets you have surrounding your work and give you confidence to turn tricky situations into creative possibilities. I want to help you speak with your own visual language and create images that you are proud of so that you can put your prices up and have more balance in your life! I want to inspire you to have fun with photography – just like when you first started out. Your camera can’t kill you so why then all the anxiety? The aim of this workshop is to move you out of a place of stuckness and into a place of self expression and confidence!  This is not a workshop where you will be shooting pretty models or learning how to be someone else!

I know what it is like to feel totally burnt out and uninspired but with my Fine Art background, introspection and lots of reading I manage to push through the dark patches! I want to help you to do the same! So far I have done workshops in Jozi, Cape Town and Durban and I love seeing my past attendees thriving.

Here’s what Angie had to say about her experience

I thoroughly enjoyed the Unstuck Yourself Workshop with Jacki! Jax shares an abundance of knowledge that’s been poured from her heart. Not only did I leave with practical tips and tricks for dealing with difficult shooting environments, but found what makes my soul sing and why I love shooting. The workshop has given me the confidence to experiment and play with my flash, as opposed to being afraid of it! The Unstuck Yourself Workshop has given me a fresh perspective to creative shooting and I can’t wait to play again!

Unstuck-Yourself-Creative-Photography-Workshop-Jacki-Bruniquel-042-865

(This photo of Ang was taken by me on the day by the way. She was warned to bring an extra set of clothes – also we have no drought here in Durbs at the mo!)

But back onto the Durban workshop. As mentioned I held this workshop at my home in Ballito as I wanted to teach in a casual, creative space where folk can kick their shoes off and feel like they are at home.

South-African-House-Refurb-Top-South-African-Photographer-Jacki-Bruniquel-Mouse-House-013

I should back track though and mention that our work together actually starts 4 weeks before the Unstuck Yourself workshop even happens when attendees are given weekly exercises designed to kickstart the creative process.  These are the beginning of our journey together and ensure that everyone enters the right mindset before the big day even starts.

When the big day for the Durban workshop eventually came around we started off with lectures in the lounge where I told my story and shared advice on everything from finding your own language to the importance of educating your clients.

When the sun was high in the sky we went outside to work with lighting techniques to get rid of what I call “racoon eye”. I don’t use professional models for demonstrations – Nope I take pics of everyone who attends! This isn’t that kind of workshop!

As you can see Milo is a gorgeous girl that’s for sure but no one looks great under the unflattering noon sun. Here’s a before and after problem solving lighting technique pic that doesn’t involve expensive strobes.

Unstuck-Yourself-Creative-Photography-Workshop-Jacki-Bruniquel-019-791

And here’s what Milo had to say about the workshop

Your workshop was amazing, Jax. I left feeling like I had new life breathed into me, not only in my photography journey but in my personal life too, and with a greater knowledge of who I am as a photographer, what I want to photograph and with the tools to create truly amazing ‘out of the box’ photos.

Here’s another example this time with the gorgeous Des.

Unstuck-Yourself-Creative-Photography-Workshop-Jacki-Bruniquel-017-92

Here’s what Des had to say about her experience

I needed a workshop that gave me a reason to shoot as I was in a slump. I needed something that would give me a creative reboot. The workshop gave me some perspective. It was kind of the light at the end of my dark tunnel. I know I need to work seriously hard but I feel like I have a reason to now.

After our first practical shooting session we hit the lunch table which was beautifully decorated by the uber talented Carolyn from Adore Weddings and Events. Thanks Ca you are a ray of sunshine in my life!!!

Unstuck-Yourself-Creative-Photography-Workshop-Jacki-Bruniquel-002-1724

The food which was made by Carissa from Bleu Berri Catering was delicious, nurturing and vegetarian! I wish she could cook for me every single day!!!

Unstuck-Yourself-Creative-Photography-Workshop-Jacki-Bruniquel-023-610

Huge thanks also to Kendal from the House of Hudson for providing the tables and chairs. My balcony feels very bare without them now and I miss them – A lot of learning and sharing happened over that lunch table!

Unstuck-Yourself-Creative-Photography-Workshop-Jacki-Bruniquel-005-7624

After lunch we went into more lectures which cover everything from how to unboring your pics to how to deal with creative anxiety. We also had time for questions of which there were many!!!

The afternoon/evening involves practical shooting time where I show attendees various techniques to problem solve tricky shooting and lighting situations.

I had a very special day at the Unstuck Yourself Workshop and I personally feel that this workshop goes beyond photography

Jacki’s humbleness and kindness was so prevalant throughout the day and her ability to share and teach others is a special gift and something not many share

Lisa Woest

Shot in a boring white room in tricky light to show you that you don’t need to shoot in fancy venus to create something interesting

Everything about the workshop was beneficial and the cost was worth it 🙂 A great investment to my own business.

Jacki is a brilliant teacher, not only due to her wealth of experience but her humble, honest nature allows her to completely open up about her flaws, failings and mistakes in a way that many others egos wouldn’t allow. She has taught me to take mistakes as lessons, unforeseen chaos as opportunities and ways to navigate through the photography world, clients and life. I have learnt that photography can be a business but most importantly it is a way of playfully capture the best moments of life that will tangibly represent our fondest memories.

I have been incredibly privileged to have such a remarkable human open up to me and teach me everything she knows without reservation and I have grown in ways I never dreamed I could under her watchful eye and persistent nudging.

This workshop is really helpful with creativity. Seeing what you created in those situations was amazing.

I loved the homework and the fact that you showed us practical tips. I don’t have a lot of gear so I loved when you were using unconventional things to create your shots.

Bailee Guy

Shot to show attendees how handy a constant light source can be when in a rushed situation. The light bulbs were just added for a bit of fun!

Loved everything minute of the workshop
My brain is still trying to process and absorb all the invaluable informational you gave us – I am seriously amped for my next wedding in a couple of weeks time

Chantel Oosterberg

Having some fun here with constant light sources

Unstuck-Yourself-Creative-Photography-Workshop-Jacki-Bruniquel-043-416

I was feeling pretty burnt out before the workshop so it was important to be reminded that you need to take time out for yourself to get those creative juices flowing constantly.

Weddings are not always completely pretty and perfect so I loved the fact that Jacki taught us how to problem solve difficult shooting situations by using little tricks that she demonstrated to us.

I am feeling inspired after the workshop and can’t wait to start applying some of the things to my work.

Derryn Semple

Shot at night when all the light is finished and many photographers are freaking out

Unstuck-Yourself-Creative-Photography-Workshop-Jacki-Bruniquel-049-

“Jacki’s workshop was like a big hug and a kick up the arse at the same time. Her barefooted, casual approach allowed us to feel completely at ease in the cozy setting of her home while she delivered some hard truths. I left feeling inspired to experiment more with the lighting equipment which was getting dusty in my cupboard, and prepared to put in the time to improve my skills. Hearing the journey Jacki has been on to get to this point and understanding that her struggles as a creative are just the same as mine, and the same as everyones, made me feel inspired and motivated. Jacki shared her knowledge openly and freely, and has equipped me with the tools and the confidence to take my business to the next level. Thank you Jacki – the hug was nice but the kick up the butt was necessary.”

We end the evening off with more sharing and cheese and wine around the table and the great news is that if you attend my workshop you get to join my private facebook group which means that we continue to support each other along our journies.

Studying Fine Art taught me how to come up with ideas, formulate visual language, re-inspire myself through research, think outside of the box and create images with meaning. This education has most definitely helped my career as a wedding and portrait photographer. I love teaching and have put together a workshop that is unlike the typical photography workshops that one finds on the market in South Africa today.

Creative-Photography-Workshop-by-top-South-Africa-Jacki-Bruniquel-009-426

This workshop which I have called The Unstuck Yourself Workshop is aimed at wedding and portrait photographers who have found themselves feeling burnt out, anxious and uninspired! There are no models or styled shoots at this workshop and the classes are kept small. Instead of photographing table decor, we spend time learning how to play with light, and gather inspiration so that making images becomes fun again!

The next Unstuck Yourself Workshop will be happening in Durban on the 31st of January and if you would like to book drop me an email on jacki@jackibruniquel.com .The workshop runs between 10am and 8pm and costs R4500 for the day. Classes are kept small, I already have a wait list and the workshops sell out fast so don’t delay!

The last Unstuck Yourself workshop was held at Cathy Layzelle’s painting studio in Woodstock, Cape Town. It is a marvelously creative space overlooking the mountains and the city. I wanted to pick up a paintbrush and start making stuff the first time I walked in there hence me wanting to give photographers a different experience in a space that wouldn’t typically be used for a photography workshop.

Creative-Photography-Workshop-by-top-South-Africa-Jacki-Bruniquel-018-24

The day started off with lectures where I told my story and then attendees shared some of their homework exercises.

Creative-Photography-Workshop-by-top-South-Africa-Jacki-Bruniquel-020-28

Later we went out into the harsh mid day sun and had some fun playing with light!

This is when I first introduced students to my easy way of approaching flash and looking at light.

Lunch was a delicious, nutritious homemade vegetarian feast made with love by the amazing Tamlyn Martin.

Tam made up some heavenly salads and quiches and we had a great chat around the table.

In the afternoon/evening we had a long practical session where I photographed attendees in tricky lighting situations or boring areas, which one would typically avoid as a photographer.

Creative-Photography-Workshop-by-top-South-Africa-Jacki-Bruniquel-037-106

The idea behind this was to encourage photographers to play more, remove any fear surrounding flash photography and turn tricky shooting conditions into creative possibilities!

I left with a re-ignited fire, thank you Jacki!
I highly would recommend this workshop.”

Unstuck Yourself Workshop Johannesburg 2017

Unstuck Yourself Workshop Johannesburg 2017

So many wedding and portraits photographers are scared of their flash and panic when faced with tricky lighting situations. Often these same photographers can get stuck in a rut making safe images, which has them dreading making work, and serving clients who don’t resonate with them. Creative anxiety can also often be a huge problem and can debilitate new ideas and motivation.

If you are one of these photographers well then the next few lines are for you!

I know what it is like to feel totally burnt out and uninspired but with my Fine Art background, introspection and lots of reading I manage to push through the dark patches! 3 years ago I went on a trip to Bali to figure out what do with my life and my career. When I left South Africa I was battling with adrenal burnout and a broken heart. I had the 2 most wonderful life changing months in this magical land. By giving myself the space and time to think and dream I came home inspired and filled with a new lease on life. I realized whilst I was there that I wanted to help other people reach their potential and I dreamed up a workshop where I would teach other photographers to move from a place of “stuckness” and in to a place of creativity and self expression. My first “Unstuck Yourself Workshop” happened on a beautiful farm on the outskirts of Johannesburg last week. Not everyone can go to Bali for a shake up but you can take a day out of life to inspire yourself!

My aim for this workshop is to help you move past any fear you have surrounding your work and give you confidence to turn tricky situations into creative possibilities! I want to help you speak with your own visual language and create images that you are proud of! I have one spot open for the next workshop in Cape Town on the 1st of November.

Unstuck-Yourself-Creative-Photography-Workshop-Jacki-Bruniquel-007-5046

But back to the Jozi workshop. I wanted to create a workshop that was different from anything that is out there. It was held on a farm rather than a fancy hotel, there were no models or styled tables but there was plenty of “Unstucking” inspiration and learning to be had!

Unstuck-Yourself-Creative-Photography-Workshop-Jacki-Bruniquel-002-1509

It was such a fantastic day with a really great group of beautiful people. We started the morning in a creative environment with a coffee and then moved into lectures with lots of time for Q&A and feedback.

Unstuck-Yourself-Creative-Photography-Workshop-Jacki-Bruniquel-003-1473

I told my story and shared some of the ways in which I stay motivated and inspired.

Unstuck-Yourself-Creative-Photography-Workshop-Jacki-Bruniquel-004-5144

We also looked at practical ways of improving your work, finding your own visual language, thinking out of the box and finding clients who you love. I gave attendees a bunch of other tips that I have learnt along the way.

Unstuck-Yourself-Creative-Photography-Workshop-Jacki-Bruniquel-005-5023

At noon we went out in to the mid day, unflattering light to take some portraits and it was here that I first began to teach how easy it can be to use flash! I so loved seeing all the pennies drop!

Unstuck-Yourself-Creative-Photography-Workshop-Jacki-Bruniquel-006-1541

We then had a delicious vegetarian lunch and went back for more lectures.

From 3pm until dark we went to all the ugly parts of the venue that no one would ever consider shooting in and I made portraits of everyone who attended. The idea behind this is to give people practical solutions to use when faced with tricky situations so that people don’t panic and freak out when things don’t go to plan or aren’t so pretty. I also spent quite a bit of time talking about light, light adaptors and using external lights in simple easy to understand ways.

Unstuck-Yourself-Creative-Photography-Workshop-Jacki-Bruniquel-008-5374

Here is the lovely Judith Belle shot in the middle of the day in ugly, harsh lighting! And below her pic is what she had to say about the experience.

Unstuck-Yourself-Creative-Photography-Workshop-Jacki-Bruniquel-009-

“Jacki, I really want to thank you from the bottom of my heart for your workshop.
With a title like Unstuck Yourself I’m sure that it resonates with so many creatives – and that is what your workshop did. Tuesday’s conversations and practical’s made my head spin and my brain buzz… in the good way that we don’t allow ourselves to feel often enough.
I feel like I want to be better, I want to see the light, I want to work a scene and I want to be mindful of what I create and put out to the world. And in no way do I want to copy or be like anyone else, I want to do all these things but with my own voice.
I love people who see the light, and you Jacki, you’re a master at seeing light and it was a privilege to learn from you.”

Here’s the gorgeous Thabang who I photographed in a dark corner of a untidy bedroom. And what follows is what she had to say about her day.

Unstuck-Yourself-Creative-Photography-Workshop-Jacki-Bruniquel-010-2322

“The workshop was fun and very informative. I got to meet some other awesome photographers. Jacki tackled the business side in detail. How to price your packages to suit you. She also showed us some interesting tricks with lights and flash. Flash freaks me put but she made it seem super easy. I learnt that in order to be great photographer you’ve got to always seek inspiration, take time out for yourself, put in the work and try out new things. At the end of the session we had cheese and wine and got to bond.

The workshop and all it entailed helped me find the reset button. It opens up your mind.”

Here’s special Laura who I photographed at sunset and used her pretty face to demonstrate how to use fill in flash with various lighting adaptors.

Unstuck-Yourself-Creative-Photography-Workshop-Jacki-Bruniquel-011-2

“Phenomenal and beyond inspiring, I left with so many new and creative ideas, my brain is actually struggling to process it all. She is also one of the nicest and kindest people you’ll ever meet.”

This is our token hot guy Shezaad who I photographed him in a extremely messy dark garage! His words follow …..

Top-South-African-Creative-Family-Portrait-Photographer-Jacki-Bruniquel

“I think the most beneficial part of the Unstuck Yourself workshop was learning to shoot more than just pretty pictures and to make work with more meaning. The workshop covered everything that Jax promised to cover in the write up and I am no longer scared of my flash in fact I’ve realised I could get more creative with it.

I loved that we didn’t shoot models at a fancy hotel. Quiet honestly I’ve avoided workshops like that for that very reason. I don’t want to attend a workshop and come out with the exact same images as the next guy or girl.

The workshop was 100% worth it. I learnt so much, met such amazing photographer’s and was totally inspired by the end of the day!

Thank you for sharing your knowledge with us, Jax.”

Huge thanks to everyone who came along. Thanks for trusting me, thanks for your open hearts, enthusiasm and for making a dream come true!

I need to thank my good friends Germaine and Ivan for having us take over your home for the day and for having us to stay. Your place really is a piece of paradise!!!! Love you so much! Thanks to Tashy my assistant passed for helping, for taking these pics and for being so awesome. Thanks to my assistant now Lizzy Loo for working like a trojan to make this day happen. You really are something special!!! I can’t tell you how much I love you all. I am truly so grateful!
