The Mouse House Refurb Part 4

The Mouse House Refurb Part 4

It’s been a while since I have done a Mouse House post! To be frank we moved in and all revamping came to a grinding hault! We were so tired and rather traumatised by the whole building business that we needed a break. I also needed to put my head down and get back to work. Slowly but surely we are picking up the paint brushes and hammers and things are back on track. But for now … Here’s the bathroom story!

Mouse-House-Bathroom-renovation-Jacki-Bruniquel-001

The ablution facilities of the Mouse House were stuck in the 70’s and frankly a bit gross! It had a separate toilet, shower room and a room with a bath and a loo. It felt pokey, old fashioned and not somewhere where one would want to spend much time. I am a huge fan of bathing and wanted something light and airy to soak in after a long day of wedding shooting, a bathroom fit for a mermaid!

Mouse-House-Bathroom-renovation-Jacki-Bruniquel-0021

Mouse-House-Bathroom-renovation-Jacki-Bruniquel-003

Mouse-House-Bathroom-renovation-Jacki-Bruniquel-004

We had to do alot of bashing and crashing to make one spacious bathroom with a shower, bath and toilet and then a separate guest toilet as there is nothing more annoying than needing to go to the loo whilst someone is taking a long shower.

Mouse-House-Bathroom-renovation-Jacki-Bruniquel-006

There were days where I felt like we would never see the end of this!!! We thought the refurb would to take 4/5 months but it landed up taking 9 months!

Mouse-House-Bathroom-renovation-Jacki-Bruniquel-008

The bathroom felt like an extremely hard space to design but I absolutely love it now. It is a small area and being on a budget meant that we had to be clever with finishings. Riaan and I have rather different taste which didn’t help the design process but we knew we wanted something that worked with the house but was also modern, something that was light and airy and also mermaidish! (Ok so the last point was more my requirement than his!) The choices out there are endless which can be confusing and I am sure I spent 90000 hours looking at tiles and taps! (my god there are so many awful tiles out there!) The poor guys at Richmond Plumbing must have been so over me at the end of it. I can highly recommend them by the way. They were a huge help and very understanding!

Mouse-House-Bathroom-renovation-Jacki-Bruniquel-010

One of the things I most love about our post renovation Mouse House is the corner unit in the bathroom. Despite searching high and low I couldn’t find a unit that could fit into this space. Riaan cleverly suggested buying a normal rectangular free standing cupboard and then cutting it into a triangle and doing the same with a piece of marble for the top. I wasn’t too sure about this idea at first but it worked a treat! I found the unit at A E Write second hand antique dealers on Mahutma Ghandi Road. The marble was a real pain in the butt to source as no one wanted to sell me such a small piece! I searched Durban for days but eventually found a smaller off cut of marble which looks like ice when you look at it up close! It is perfect! The mirror belonged to my Gran and works rather well with the space I thought! You will also notice the copper towel rails made by Riaan.

Mouse-House-Bathroom-renovation-Jacki-Bruniquel-011

We chose black slate tile for the floor because I love it and used Johnsons old school 150×150 porcelain tiles with a few funky design interventions for the walls to fit in with the old school vibe of the house. Way cheaper than subway tiles and more authentic to this house. The shower and the side of the bath were treated to some gorgeous blue terrazzo mosaic from Union tiles which we have also used in the kitchen. (that’s my mermaid vibes right there!) You might also notice the wooden door frames and windows were all sanded right down to the original wood and treated. We also stripped the door handles down to copper. Both were an absolute mission at the time but they worked out really well.

Mouse-House-Bathroom-renovation-Jacki-Bruniquel-012

I originally wanted a free standing bath but our plumber Mike suggested going and lying in all of the baths before making a decision. The bath I chose is literally the most comfy bath I have ever laid in and can fit two people in rather easily, it was also a heck of alot cheaper!

To soften the overall look of everything our wonderful carpenter Tim made some floating shelves and window sills from old bits of wood that were left over from the refurb. Most of the pot plants were slipped and potted by me!

One of the heroes of our refurb was Mike from Mavericks Plumbing. In an ocean of inefficiency and unprofessionalism that can be the building industry Mike was fantastic and such a great person to work with. I will talk more about Tim Fish when I tell you more about our kitchen but Tim our carpenter is also a peach! I can also highly recommended our tiler Prem Gokool from Ushaka Tiling. It wasn’t an easy tiling job and the guys really went above and beyond! Thanks so much to all of you for a job well done. We are hugely grateful!

Creative-Photography-Workshop-by-top-South-Africa-Jacki-Bruniquel-001-3980

Studying Fine Art taught me how to come up with ideas, formulate visual language, re-inspire myself through research, think outside of the box and create images with meaning. This education has most definitely helped my career as a wedding and portrait photographer. I love teaching and have put together a workshop that is unlike the typical photography workshops that one finds on the market in South Africa today.

Creative-Photography-Workshop-by-top-South-Africa-Jacki-Bruniquel-009-426

This workshop which I have called The Unstuck Yourself Workshop is aimed at wedding and portrait photographers who have found themselves feeling burnt out, anxious and uninspired! There are no models or styled shoots at this workshop and the classes are kept small. Instead of photographing table decor, we spend time learning how to play with light, and gather inspiration so that making images becomes fun again!

The next Unstuck Yourself Workshop will be happening in Durban on the 31st of January and if you would like to book drop me an email on jacki@jackibruniquel.com .The workshop runs between 10am and 8pm and costs R4500 for the day. Classes are kept small, I already have a wait list and the workshops sell out fast so don’t delay!

Creative-Photography-Workshop-by-top-South-Africa-Jacki-Bruniquel-012-7

If you would like to find out more about the workshop click here for an outline of how the day is structured and what will be covered, but in a nutshell ……

  • I will encourage you to find your own style and show you practical ways to do this.
  • I give you homework exercises designed to kick-start the creativity process.
  • I encourage students to dig deep and figure out what makes you tick.
  • We will play with both natural and artificial light.
  • I teach practical solutions to shooting in difficult situations.
  • I will help you make friends with your flash.
  • I will give you practical tools to deal with creative anxiety
  • I will teach you how to think outside of the box
  • I will show you how to take your images from drab to fab
  • This workshop will revive, recharge and get rid of any fear surrounding your work.
  • Once you have done the workshop you will have tools to be more creative and authentic in the way that you approach your work so that you will be able to put your prices up and live a more balanced life.

The last Unstuck Yourself workshop was held at Cathy Layzelle’s painting studio in Woodstock, Cape Town. It is a marvelously creative space overlooking the mountains and the city. I wanted to pick up a paintbrush and start making stuff the first time I walked in there hence me wanting to give photographers a different experience in a space that wouldn’t typically be used for a photography workshop.

Creative-Photography-Workshop-by-top-South-Africa-Jacki-Bruniquel-018-24

The day started off with lectures where I told my story and then attendees shared some of their homework exercises.

Creative-Photography-Workshop-by-top-South-Africa-Jacki-Bruniquel-020-28

Later we went out into the harsh mid day sun and had some fun playing with light!

Creative-Photography-Workshop-by-top-South-Africa-Jacki-Bruniquel-026-41

This is when I first introduced students to my easy way of approaching flash and looking at light.

Creative-Photography-Workshop-by-top-South-Africa-Jacki-Bruniquel-030-54

Lunch was a delicious, nutritious homemade vegetarian feast made with love by the amazing Tamlyn Martin.

Creative-Photography-Workshop-by-top-South-Africa-Jacki-Bruniquel-032-66

Tam made up some heavenly salads and quiches and we had a great chat around the table.

Creative-Photography-Workshop-by-top-South-Africa-Jacki-Bruniquel-035-449

In the afternoon/evening we had a long practical session where I photographed attendees in tricky lighting situations or boring areas, which one would typically avoid as a photographer.

Creative-Photography-Workshop-by-top-South-Africa-Jacki-Bruniquel-037-106

The idea behind this was to encourage photographers to play more, remove any fear surrounding flash photography and turn tricky shooting conditions into creative possibilities!

Creative-Photography-Workshop-by-top-South-Africa-Jacki-Bruniquel-042-120

The evening was wrapped up with some cheese and wine. We all shared at this point and it was so great to learn from all the other attendees!

Here’s a photo which I took of some of the Cape Town attendees plus a testimonial about their experience.

Trudy

“This workshop was for me a life changing experience which is something I never expected.”

Thank you to Jacki for imparting your knowledge and a wonderful, different workshop.”

Charlene

“What I loved most about Jacki’s approach to this workshop was the homework that she gave us leading up to the day. These exercises really force you to ask yourself the difficult questions that definitely help kick-start the process unstucking yourself.
I left with a re-ignited fire, thank you Jacki!
I highly would recommend this workshop.”

Are you my new assistant???

Are you my new assistant???

My dear assistant Lizzy will be leaving me and I will be looking for a person to fill her role. Liz would have worked for me on a permanent basis for 4 years at the end of this year, and I have seen her grow in so many ways during this time. Besides learning so much from a technical and business point of view we have shared so many incredible life experiences together like visiting Mauritius, Sweden and Namibia. Lizzy has seen me through everything from a broken collar bone to refurbing a house! We have had so many laughs and been to so many different places and met so many different people over the past few years. She has been a vital ingredient in my business and has added so much value. I am incredibly sad that she is leaving but I also know how much potential this girl has and I am so looking forward to seeing her fly.

Top-South-African-Creative-Family-Portrait-Photographer-Jacki-Bruniquel

In case you are new to my work …..

I am a creative wedding and portrait photographer based in Ballito KZN. All of my shooting is done on location and I shoot all over KZN, South Africa and have had a few international assignments to date. My office is in my home at the Mouse House and this is where a lot of the post-production is done, although Liz does work from home quite often.

My assistant’s responsibilities are:

Ensuring all batteries are charged, lenses are cleaned and equipment is in order for shoots

Packing for shoots and making sure nothing is left behind

Assisting me on all shoots

Monitoring memory cards

Working with off camera flash

Working with reflectors and scrims

Ensuring that we stick to schedule

Second shooting during certain parts of a wedding

Keeping a record of all travel done for the accountant

Ordering all slips for tax purposes

Processing images with Adobe Lightroom

Retouching images with Adobe Photoshop

Designing Wedding Albums with ProSelect

Backing up images onto various hard drives

Burning memory sticks for clients

Keeping Calendars in order in the office and following up on workflow

There is a fair amount of PA work to be done like booking flights, car hire etc

Admin work etc

Top-South-African-Creative-Family-Portrait-Photographer-Jacki-Bruniquel

I work very closely with Lizzy at all times. We are practically joined at the hip when things get busy, therefore it is very important my new assistant is an agreeable person who is easy to get along with. They need to be able to work well under pressure and deal with me who can sometimes be ditzy. We are often away together and need to share a room so I am more interested in employing a female. I work on a number of high-end weddings therefore this person needs to be professional, polite, discreet and presentable as they will have direct contact with my clients. I am not interested in employing any chancers who want to work with me for a few months and then go off on their own. It is absolutely vital that this person is 100% reliable and won’t let me down at the last minute. It must be noted that this job involves long hours on the computer and when things are busy it can be a 6 day a week job. We do have our down time though and I do take on less weddings than the average photographer!

Top-South-African-Creative-Family-Portrait-Photographer-Jacki-Bruniquel

Here is my wish list:

Female

A non-smoker

Should have their own transport and a valid license

As I live in Ballito it would make sense that they live relatively close to where I do to prevent huge petrol costs but if you are willing to travel Lizzy has been commuting from Glenwood.

Fast learner

Hard worker

They must be prepared to work long hours, both during the week and at weekends, and carry heavy equipment

They must be prepared to travel, stay overnight on assignments and share a room with me when need be

They should have a valid passport

They must not snore!!!

Assistant is required to be well dressed and groomed on wedding assignments – they can wear whatever they like during normal office hours.

Skilled with Lightroom and Photoshop

If they know Illustrator this will be a bonus

Must have a knowledge of Photography and can shoot in manual

Organizational skills are very important

Diligence and taking pride in work is essential

Honesty and reliability is a must

They need to be happy with working long hours on a computer

This person needs to be able to prove themselves and go the extra mile

Top-South-African-Creative-Family-Portrait-Photographer-Jacki-Bruniquel

I spent many years assisting photographers and believe this is a vital stepping-stone to setting up your own business. I am happy to nurture my new assistant and give them the secrets to the success I have worked for over the years but in return they need to stick around for at least two years and work hard. Wedding Photography at the level that I practice it is incredibly hard work but it is also very rewarding. Every job is totally different. We have shot weddings on farms and fancy hotels, have met so many different types of people over the years and have had so many different cultural experiences. If you love people and love people watching this is the job for you. If you love travel you will fit right in. If you love high paced work that is never boring this is the job for you.  If you love retouching pictures and making beautiful work this is the job for you.

Top-South-African-Creative-Family-Portrait-Photographer-Jacki-Bruniquel

The successful applicant will be required to go through an intense training period for office work and shooting work before Lizzy departs. Their full time position will take in to effect in 2018 but they need to be 100% up to scratch before this commences.

Salary will be determined by skill and will be increased as applicant adds value to the business.

Interested persons can send me a CV and a letter motivating why I should hire them. They should also explain why they would like to work with me. My address is jacki(@)jackibruniquel.com If we feel you are potentially the right person for the job there will be a questionnaire to fill out and from there an interview.

Thanks so much for your time.

The Best Of: The Oyster Box Hotel Weddings

The Best Of: The Oyster Box Hotel Weddings

A while back the marketing ladies from The Oyster Box Hotel asked me if I would be open to them using some of my imagery on their website. This beautiful Umhlanga hotel is one of my favourite places to photograph weddings in the whole of South Africa so I was more than happy to comply! I have shot A LOT of weddings at The Oyster Box during all my many years of being a wedding photographer and whilst gathering the images together I realised it would make a fabulous celebratory blog post!

This luxury five star hotel is a prime South African wedding destination for so many reasons! It overlooks a pristine beach housing the iconic Umhlanga lighthouse, the decor in the hotel is breathtaking which for an artist like me is so inspirational, the service is through the charts, the food is absolutely delicious and the staff are all so friendly. If you are a couple who are looking for a classy wedding by the beach without the beach sand, this may be the venue for you!

I got a bit teary looking through all of these pics as I realised how many beautiful moments and special people I have photographed over the years in this gorgeous hotel. Every couple different, every couple with their own story, every couple open and willing to allow me into a momentous milestone in their life to tell their narrative with my camera. The Mouse House Refurb – Part Three

The Mouse House Refurb – Part Three

If you have wondered why I have been quiet of late, it’s because I bought an old house to renovate last year. My plan was to buy a lock up and go, but when Simon Nicholson from Remax first showed Riaan and I The Mouse House, we both fell in love with it and thought it would be a fun fix up project . Whilst there have been many moments of fun, it has up until this point mostly been the most stressful, expensive and all consuming thing I have ever done – LIKE EVER! We are finally nearing the end and only now the blood, sweat and tears are starting to seem like they have been worth it! I have a giant hole in my pocket but when I look at these photos I feel darned proud of us!!

My budget was rather limited so we didn’t have the luxury of a project manager or fancy builder/architect to co ordinate, which meant that we were thrown totally in the deep end. I didn’t’ even know what a lintel or a shadow gap was before embarking on this crazy ride!

We had a lot to do to bring The Mouse House into the two thousand and teens. We fixed much of the outside fence, replaced the front gate, put in a security system, refurbed and rebuilt the entire kitchen and bathroom, we have re-plumbed the whole house, redone most of the electrics, re-painted throughout, we have knocked down walls, put in a stacking door, sanded down all wood in the house, we have re done much of the flooring, tackled the garden and still there is so much to do!!!

There has been many a disaster, numerous let downs and a good dollop of education tax which has meant I have had to confront my dislike for confrontation. People warned me that the building industry was a nightmare to deal with but I really had no idea! They warned me to throw my budget out of the window but I had no idea. They warned me that however long I was told the build would take I should add on double the amount of time, but I had no idea! They told me I would tear my hair out with contractors, but I had no idea!!!! They didn’t however tell me about how exciting it would be when I saw my Mexican tiles laid out in the kitchen. They didn’t tell me about how blissful it would be to have my first bath in the bathroom we designed or how special it would be to drink my first coffee on the patio after our first night in the house. It’s been tough but now that things are starting come together I am seeing the value in time and hard earned ZARs spent on making this space come together as uniquely ours.

South-African-House-Refurb-Top-South-African-Photographer-Jacki-Bruniquel-Mouse-House-002

In this blog I will show you a few pics of our kitchen renovation and some other details. The kitchen is still in progress and we haven’t decorated or moved in yet, but I am sure you will also be able to see the huge changes since my first blog posts which you can have a look at here or here.

South-African-House-Refurb-Top-South-African-Photographer-Jacki-Bruniquel-Mouse-House-003

In the photos above you can see the original kitchen/living room area. We took out the wall that divided the two rooms to make for a nice big open plan space which you can see below. We also replaced the ugly vinyl kitchen floor with a grey terrazzo to keep with the theme of the lounge and dinning area. One of the reasons why I love the house is because of the original terrazzo floors. Some people said I should rip up the yellow terrazzo but being totally tile mad there was no ways that was going to happen and we have restored the terrazzo to its former glory and added a playful blue border to divide the spaces.

South-African-House-Refurb-Top-South-African-Photographer-Jacki-Bruniquel-Mouse-House-004

Riaan designed the whole kitchen before we bought the kitchen carcasses from Board Prep which he then assembled. The doors/island etc are being crafted by Tim Fish our wonderful carpenter. The counter tops are polished concrete and Riaan is making the kitchen lights but I will get onto that later.

South-African-House-Refurb-Top-South-African-Photographer-Jacki-Bruniquel-Mouse-House-005

South-African-House-Refurb-Top-South-African-Photographer-Jacki-Bruniquel-Mouse-House-006

In the pics below you can see the huge change from the original patio! It looks and feels so much better now that we have put in the stacking door. We also bricked in half of the old original door and converted it into a window to give us a bit more wall space for art indoors. You can also see the new house colour in the last pic in this series! I chose Evening Glade and Feather Ferns from Plascon for the outside of the house as I wanted to create a tranquil feel by blending the house colour with the surrounding forest. It took sooooooooo many paint samples to get this colour right!!!! I am pretty sure I tried about 50 different shades of grey/green!

Here are a few snippety Mouse House details – We are still very much unfinished but we are slowly putting our stamp on the place!

South-African-House-Refurb-Top-South-African-Photographer-Jacki-Bruniquel-Mouse-House-013

Riaan is making the kitchen lamp shades out of the old original geyser! We have tried to upcycle and use as much as we can from the original house. I think he is darned clever!!!

South-African-House-Refurb-Top-South-African-Photographer-Jacki-Bruniquel-Mouse-House-014

And while we are talking about upcycling and lights – we have also given the original outside entrance light a total over haul. This definitely beats buying a new one as this old light has way more stories to tell and we saved some cash here that is for sure!!!! Lights are not cheap!

South-African-House-Refurb-Top-South-African-Photographer-Jacki-Bruniquel-Mouse-House-015

Riaan has been such a star throughout this build and there is no ways that I would have ever been able to do this without him. He has researched, designed, hung, painted and installed, and I am very lucky to have him besides me as a partner in life and also on our current floor mattress!!! Yip we are STILL camping in the space!!!

And lastly – A glimpse into why we fell in love with the house! When you are here, you are in nature!!!! And being in nature is like being in heaven for me!!! We can hear the bush babies calling at night and there is a resident tree frog in one of the orchids in the garden!

If you want to follow more of my Mouse House updates you can find me on @thelandofjax on instagram.
