The Mouse House Part One

The Mouse House Part One

They say that you never know what is around the corner and I would tend to agree as something rather huge has happened in Jax land! I have bought a house!!!! This was honestly the last thing I ever expected to do this year, in fact 2016 was meant to be the year where I would chill more and take some time out to go India to travel for a bit and not put so much pressure on myself.  Life however had other plans for me and we landed up in a bit of a horrible situation which led us here! And here is not a bad place to be.

The housey which shall forever be named  The Mouse House is a real little gem with loads of character and a viridescent green garden lined with a canopy  of indigenous trees. My favourite thing about the house is that it has a perfect verandah overlooking all the magic. The Mouse House was built in 1967 and it sports some delicious terrazzo tiles which most people would rip out but which I absolutely adore #ihavethisthingwithfloors Riaan would say that the best part is that it is right by a forest and has two double garages and I would say that the best part is that it has soul and a wonderful energy which so many new builds are lacking these days. Riaan loves the 70’s vibe and I love the view. It has however also suffered from some pretty ridiculous design features which were so typical of that time, like compartmentalised spaces, a grotty kitchen and a less than spa like bathroom. Despite these, Riaan and I fell in love with the place the first time that our estate agent Simon Nicholson showed us the property. After lots of chatting and finding ourselves in a position where we needed to move we decided to take on this enormous project and refurb! It’s going to be one hell of a task and there are moments when I wonder what the heck we have done but I know that in the end it will be wonderful to create a space that is uniquely ours.

Whilst I have been all over the country over the past couple of weeks Riaan has started the process and I came home to a building site! The photos below are the before pics. Things are looking quite different today!!! I am going to blog about our progress and they will come in blog posts titled “The Mouse House” The next instalment will be the building site that is currently keeping us both up at night!

Huge thanks to Simon from Remax for just knowing  our vibe!!! Simon was such a star and has helped us at every turn which is great for a first time buyer like myself! You can click here to join his Facebook page. He is a talented writer, an unbelievably inspiring person and a darned good estate agent who wont rip you off. He operates on the Dolphin Coast of Natal. I would also like to mention and thank my mortgage broker Arnold from Ilumina Capital. Arnold has had plenty of years in the banking industry and is a whizz with helping self employed individuals like myself deal with banks. He made my life so easy and is an absolute god-send!

PS I took all these pics of us with a self timer and a tripod! It’s not that easy to do. We took alot of photos to get a few where we don’t look like total chops!

PPS I was never a dog person. I was a cat person. And then I met Riaan and Panther Bear and now we are 3 and I love both of these boys madly.

PPPS One really never knows what is around the corner!!!

Winner of the Admired in Africa Photographer of the Year 2016

Winner of the Admired in Africa Photographer of the Year 2016

2016 sure has thrown some challenges at me but there have also been some wonderful moments and blessings to celebrate!

First off is that I’ve had a couple of very big affirmations from the international wedding photography community. I was placed on the Fearless Photographers top 100 photographers of all time. The calibre of photographers on this list is astounding so this really was an incredible piece of news. Next up was being placed on the SLR top 150 international wedding photographers of 2016 and lastly but certainly not least was winning the Admired in Africa top wedding photographer of 2016! Besides this huge accolade I won  a camera that I have been lusting for! I won a Fuji XT2 mirrorless which I am absolutely delighted with. Golly I feel very lucky and this certainly makes all the hard work and long hours worth it.

Kubu Island Engagement Shoot in Botswana – Nicole + James

Kubu Island Engagement Shoot in Botswana – Nicole + James

It’s not every day that you receive an email from a potential client asking if you would be prepared to travel to Botswana to photograph an engagement shoot. I could put money down that it’s the first time anyone has ever asked any photographer to do their engagement shoot on Kubu Island in the Makgadigadi Pans. Nicole and James aren’t the type of people to do things in small measures though and are constantly looking for new adventures and experiences. They live in Maun and work as bush pilots, which means their job generally consists of flying tourists to remote destinations off the beaten track. The two of them dream big but aren’t afraid of getting their hands dirty to turn their ideas into reality. This engagement shoot was a good example of that! The logistics involved in making it happen would probably have most people discarding the idea because it would be too much of a mission. This shoot involved a good 12 hours of driving through some crazy terrain in 2 4×4’s, packing enough camping equipment for 5 people to spend a night on a rock island covered in ancient baobab trees in the middle of the pans, feeding everyone healthy meals from the fire in a place with no electricity or running water, getting lost in the bundus with nothing but a map and a compass to guide us out, and nearly running out of petrol.

Kubu Island is one of the most beautiful places I have ever been to and this crazy experience was a memory I will always hold dear. Huge thanks to Nicole and James for coming up with this beautiful, mad, fantastical idea!

Wedding Guests

Wedding Guests

This one is for my photographer friends …….

A good wedding photographer isn’t just a good picture taker. You need to have the people skills of a ninja, have an enormous sense of diplomacy, patience, assertiveness and humor. You will need to learn how to deal with different personalities whilst undergoing a huge amount of stress. No one wants to hire a bossy be –yatch and so much of your future business will happen as a result of word of mouth. The way you conduct yourself on a wedding day will sell you as much as your pictures.

How you deal with the wedding guests is as important as how you deal with your bride and groom. Whether you have a wedding of 6 people or 600 people you need to treat everyone with respect. They are an extension of the couple

Today I am going to take a tongue and cheek look at some of the guests you will encounter along the way.

  • The oblivious guests who pull out their cell phones right in front of your lens as the bride is coming down the aisle.

  • The well meaning bridesmaid who keeps trying to direct your shoot with the words “When I got married my photographer did X Y and Z…….”
  • The naive guest who says “You can just Photoshop that?”

  • The photography hobby enthusiast guest who pulls out their SLR camera to second shoot the wedding and add a few snaps to their portfolio.
  • The over zealous guest who goes up to the alter to photograph the exchange of rings.
  • The tipsy guest who thinks it will be really funny to keep photo bombing as many pics as possible

  • The determined guest who shoves you out of the way as the bride and groom get showered with confetti so they get a snap with their ipad.
  • The over the shoulder picture thief who stands behind you as you try and take the family formals which means that everyone is looking every where except into your lens.
  • The super Mom of the flower girl who asks you to just quickly do a few family photos for her as you are leaving the church for your couple portrait session.

  • The camera loving guest who grabs you every 20 minutes to ask you to take a picture of them with their aunt, cousin, second cousin, uncle, bride, groom, friend, girlfriend ………candle stick.
  • The puzzled guest who grabs you as the couple are doing their first dance to ask you to help them work out a setting on their camera

  • The flirty guest who decides that either you or your assistant should go on a date with them
  • The helpful guest who taps you on the shoulder in the middle of the speeches to tell you that your flash is pointed backwards.

  • The interested guest who asks “Do you only photograph weddings and what do you do with all your time during the week”
  • The generous guest who keeps offering you shots of tequila.
  • The drunk guest who grabs your camera to take a selfie with you on the dance floor.

If you are an experienced wedding photographer I am sure you would have made contact with most of these guests and a few more!

Guests are general well meaning and no one is out to sabotage your job or make your life difficult, they are just not on your side of the lens and perhaps just don’t get it. Let’s face it us photographers go to more weddings than they do. So take deep breath, put on your assertive pants and learn how to deal with all of it. Educating your client about certain issues will go along way, for example I always try and take the family photos away from the canapé area but there will always be that one drunk guy who insists on grabbing your expensive gear to take a selfie with you!!! These guests are an occupational hazard and are part of the crazy that makes weddings so exciting to shoot. We really do have the least boring job in the world!

The illustrations here are by Ché Dyer of Indieberries fame! Thanks so much Ché.

How to unboring your wedding pics?

How to unboring your wedding pics?

I recently gave a lecture to a group of 30 odd photographers on behalf of Nikon on “How to unboring your wedding Photography” and one of the questions I asked the audience was “What is it about wedding photography that makes you love it?”

I believe that in order to make authentic images we need to turn inward to discover what we really love and what we are drawn to instead of blindly copying trends or trying to do what everyone else is doing. If we know what we like and why, then we can apply these to our own work and use it as a map or a guide. If we keep coming back to this map we can create our own path instead of looking at everyone else and following the status quo which aside from being boring, can be an endless cycle.

I studied Fine Art and this has become a guide for me as it is important for me that I make images that have meaning behind them. I love to tell stories with my camera and also create new stories every time I shoot. It would kill me to keep making the same images over and over and have a repertoire of shots that I reproduce in every album. I also love to people watch and so I love taking unscripted documentary images of people doing all the weird and wonderful things that they do at weddings. I draw much of my inspiration from my clients. Weddings offer me the opportunity to take creative portraits, tell stories with my camera and also capture moments like a photo journalist. This is why I love photographing weddings and I use this as a map every time I shoot. This is also why my clients come to me!

Huge thanks to everyone who came along to my chat! So good to meet you all!!!
