SpiritFest – A Yoga, Dance and Music festival

SpiritFest – A Yoga, Dance and Music festival

Festivals can sometimes have the reputation as being debaucherous affairs frequented by folk who love to party. It would also be fair to say that most of them entail camping, music and dirty feet! SpiritFest involved all of the latter, but none of the former. It is a festival where alcohol and any other mind-altering substances are not welcome, but open hearts and kindness are a requirement. If you have never heard of SpiritFest I will fill you in. It is a yoga, music and dance festival, which happened this year on the banks of the Citrusdal River.

The festival was spread over four days and sported a jam-packed schedule of yoga classes, dance sessions, talks, guided meditations, music performances and DJ’s. It is worth noting that SpiritFest is a child friendly event and they had a whole schedule organised for little ones. It is also a meat free event and there were lots of food stalls offering delicious vegetarian meals to satisfy one’s hunger. For those who like to shop there was a market of varied and interesting goodies to buy.

There was so much going on that it was impossible to attend everything, and the weather was absolutely gorgeous so dips in the cool river and taking the time to sunbathe on its banks under the majestic mountains were a welcome distraction. The yoga classes ranged from Kundalini and Forest Yoga, to Hatha, Vinyassa, Iyenga and Acro Yoga and it was fabulous to try so many different styles and teachers. I love doing yoga to music and there was a yoga DJ at every class I attended. Another highlight for me were the dance sessions. Again these ranged from a spirited NIA class to 5 Rhythms Dancing to free dancing sessions with DJ Epple-Sauce, which my sister nicknamed the “sober rave time”. One minute there would be a class of 100 people doing yoga, and the next the marque would be transformed into a rocking dance floor which had everyone flocking in for a quick sober jam and a whole load of fun!

My best part of SpiritFest however was spending quality time with my sister who lives in Cape Town! We were also fortunate to hang with some other special friends who I just don’t see enough of. You know who you are !!! It was a soulful, bonding time that lifted my spirit and inspired every cell, which was exactly what I needed!

Huge thanks to the organisers and everyone involved for your vision, energy and the enormous effort in putting this together. You have given everyone who attended an incredible gift. I can’t wait for next year’s event!!! If you are interested you can join their Facebook page here. SpiritFest is also on Instagram @spiritfestafrica

PS As I am usually the one behind the camera I so seldom feature in photos and I know Lisa is probably going to hate this pic below but I think our facial expressions really are telling of how blissed out we were at the end of it all. Thanks Lis for the best time!!! Love you

PPS For those that are interested in photography. I shot all of these pics on the mirrorless Fuji XT2 which I was fortunate enough to win at the Admired in Africa Awards 2016. At the moment I only have the kit lens it came with. It’s a fabulous camera for documentary work. It’s super light, compact and unobtrusive and I love the flip up screen and the fact that what you see is what you get. The focusing is also way faster on the XT2 as it is on the XT1. I still need to spend more time to become better friends with this little machine but we are slowly getting there!

Creative Family Photography in Durban

Creative Family Photography in Durban

People often ask me why I don’t publish family pics on my blog and my answer is simply that weddings are my speciality and when I am crazy busy with weddings I don’t have much time for other work. However I often do maternity and family shoots for previous wedding clients which I love, as it is so special for me to keep in contact and capture the important milestones of peoples lives.

If you follow me on social media you will know that we are in the middle of a massive house refurb at the moment and my gosh building is expensive! I have therefore opened up my diary over the school holidays and will be taking on a limited number of family portraits sessions on my 2016 prices. The same will go for individual portrait shoots or couple shoots. So if you have been keen on working with me but needed an excuse – drop me a mail on jacki@jackibruniquel.com and I will send through some info.

Couple Shoots by Jacki Bruniquel – From Durban to Botswana and beyond

Couple Shoots by Jacki Bruniquel – From Durban to Botswana and beyond

I love photographing people and telling stories with my camera! This is why I so enjoy engagement shoots and couple shoots, although you would never say so judging by the fact that I haven’t blogged any of these for so long! I decided it high time to change this today and so I gathered up some of my favourite pics from couple sessions that I have done in Durban, Botswana, Joburg and Madikwe Game Reserve and am presenting them to you here at long last!

Whenever I do a shoot like this, my first step is to ask my clients who they are, what they do together, where they live, what makes them tick and what makes them excited. Armed with this information we decide upon a theme, location and dress code and we go out and have some fun together. The result is that each shoot is specific to each couple rather than me just sausage factory churning them out. A few of these shoots are engagement shoots for couples who’s wedding I went on to photograph. Engagement shoots are such a great way to get to know your photographer and it makes having your picture taken on the wedding day way less intimidating. They are great for us photographers as they give us the opportunity to learn how you roll, what makes you laugh and what your best angles are . A few of the shoots shown here are of couples who have been married for some time. One couple were celebrating a 10th year anniversary and her husband bought his wife the shoot as a gift and another couple never had a big wedding with a photographer so these pics were a celebration of their union and their life together now.

If you are interested in doing a shoot with your partner get in touch! I would love to tell your story!

Best Wedding Pics of 2016

Best Wedding Pics of 2016

2016 sure has thrown some challenges at me but there have also been some wonderful moments and blessings to celebrate!

First off is that I have had a couple of very big affirmations from the international wedding photography community. This year I was placed on the Fearless Photographers top 100 photographers of all time. The calibre of photographers on this list is astounding so this really was an incredible piece of news. Next up was being placed on the SLR top 150 international wedding photographers of 2016 and lastly but certainly not least was winning the Admired in Africa top wedding photographer of 2016! The prize with this feather in my cap was a camera I have been lusting for! I won a Fuji XT2 mirrorless which I am absolutely delighted with. Golly I feel very lucky and this certainly makes all the hard work and long hours worth it.

One of the biggest blessings of 2016 however is the fact that I have had such a wonderful bunch of clients over the past year. Wedding photography has taken me all over the country and in fact the world, but the thing that keeps me keeping on is that I am constantly meeting dynamic and interesting people who inspire me to tell their stories. Huge thanks to all of my clients for entrusting me with your memories and for looking after us so well.

I must also thank all the other wedding suppliers who we have worked alongside this year. We have had alot of laughs over this big bad crazy 2016th of a year! Thank you for all your help and friendship!

Lastly I am extending a huge thank you to my assistant Liz. She has been there for me through thick and thin this year and there are no words to adequately describe how deeply I appreciate all her hard work, loyalty and boundless energy! Liz you rock and I am so lucky to have you in my life.

Here’s to a 2017 full of abundance, joy, experience, beauty and peace.

The Mouse House – Demolition Time – Part Two

The Mouse House – Demolition Time – Part Two

I started my First Mouse House Blog with a reference to the fact that “You never know what is around the corner.” This seems to be a bit of a theme for 2016 in Jax land!

In case you didn’t catch that first post, I bought a house and we are now on a huge renovation mission. The plan was for me to document every step of the way but work has taken me away for a large chunk of the proceedings and am currently out of action with my arm in a sling! Yip I fell off my bicycle last week and landed up in hospital with a concussion, a broken clavicle and no recollection of what actually happened! Luckily I had taken some time out of work to deal with the house and the surgery all went well, so besides being an enormous frustration, feeling rather kak with the concussion head and bloody sore in the collar bone area I haven’t been too affected.

On the up side, I recently won the Admired in Africa Wedding Photographer of the year and with this came the incredible prize of a Fjui XT2 which I will definitely be using to take pics of the house! Right now I have been told to rest so …….. Watch this space for new pics.

In the meantime here are some photos of the demolition craziness that has been happening at the mouse house. Most of these were shot by Riaan on his phone.

The pic above shows the wall between the living area and the kitchen which we have now removed to create an open plan space.

Above you will see the old outdated kitchen which has now been removed as you can see below. We are also replacing the old linoleum floors with more tiling and this has meant chipping up the screed which is also a big job. The original old geyser as well as all the plumbing have been replaced and modernized into something more energy efficient. Riaan is going to be upcycling the copper inside of the geyser into light fittings.

And here you will see a pic of the old compartmentalized toilet, shower and bathroom which have been totally gutted to make one more spacious bathroom and one separate toilet.

The floors in the passage and the bedrooms were all covered in old linoleum which we removed to reveal a pretty solid screed. With a lot of elbow grease our builders managed to remove the bitchumen with bitchumen remover. We aren’t quite sure what we are going to do here but I like the look and coolness of screed so I think we are probably going to go with this.

This refurbishing business is incredibly stressful and so time consuming but I am so darned excited to see our vision come to life. This really is a dream come true and even though there have been moments where I have felt like I am about to blow a fuse I am also constantly counting my blessings and giving thanks. I am particularly giving thanks for Riaan who has been my rock through all of this. He is also very clever with design and space so I am very lucky to have him on my team! Next Mouse House post I will introduce you to my new tile obsession and some other people on my team!
