Behind the Scenes – Jax in Action at recent weddings

Behind the Scenes – Jax in Action at recent weddings

It’s been an incredibly busy season in Jax land. KZN winters are not quiet that is for sure! Here are some daft photos that Lizzy has taken of me in action over the past while. When I see photos of myself shooting I can only wonder what my clients must  think but I am sure they are thankful I don’t wear dainty dresses and heels when they see the results!

PS Now I understand my neck and back issues!

Recent Engagement Shoots

Recent Engagement Shoots

It’s been a while since I have posted an engagement shoot so I thought I would change that today! I love doing engagement shoots as they give me valuable time with my clients which allows me to get to know their personalities and their best sides so that on the wedding day I am prepared to do the best job possible for them. They are also lots of fun!

The first flower crown in the pics was made by Carolyn McNeil from Adore Weddings and Events

The crown of red roses was made by Nicole Bezuidenhout from Buttons and Blooms

Review on the Sigma 50mm 1.4 and 35mm 1.4

Review on the Sigma 50mm 1.4 and 35mm 1.4

If you had to ask a wedding photographer what their favourite lens is, chances are they will answer a 5o mm prime. The 35mm prime is also becoming increasingly popular with wedding photographers and has long been loved by photo-journalists. I am a little different! If you have a look at what is usually on my cameras you will find my 24-70mm 2.8 Nikon and the 70-200mm 2.8 Nikon. I choose lenses based on how quickly they focus, how sharp they are and what kind of result, and or effect, they give me. Lenses are, at the end of the day, a tool! I love my Nikon zooms, I have gotten pretty used to operating with them and trust them both implicitly!

I have never really gelled with the 50mm prime, and have never tried a 35mm prime, but an old dog needs to learn knew tricks and I am always open to learning new ways of doing things so when Michael from Sigma got hold of me to ask if I would like to test out the Sigma 50mm 1.4 and 35mm 1.4 art lenses I jumped at the chance!

I have been blown away by these lenses! They focus incredibly fast, they are sharp as tack, the bokeh that they create is just so pretty and the price of them is really reasonable, which is a great advantage for us South Africans on a weak Rand. If you were in the market to buy a prime lens I couldn’t recommend these enough!

I took these pics at a recent wedding during the bridal prep and pre wedding shoot. Thanks to Bhav and Yash for allowing me to experiment on you!

Afrika Burn 2015

Afrika Burn 2015

My plan for Afrika Burn was to shoot the living daylights out of it. I actually planned to shoot the daylights, the nightlights and everything else in between. But Afrika Burn had other plans for me, so these pictures are a story within a chapter of my Afrika Burn experience. This year was my second Burn, and I can tell you that there will be more stories and more chapters as we are already thinking of next year. It hooks you like that!

For those of you who haven’t heard about Afrika Burn, it is an arts festival that could be described as Africa’s version of Burning Man, and it happens once a year in the desert in the Tankwa Karoo National Park. Thousands of people come together to form a community that celebrates love, life, self-expression and creativity. It’s a place where you can be your inner unicorn and not be judged, a place where there is nothing to be bought or sold, a place where you can dance naked under the stars if that is really what you can do, or you can just sit and watch the sheer whimsy and delight of it all! It is an artist’s paradise, a safe space for the inner child to run free and for the adult to learn that society could be better if we all practiced more kindness, generosity and sense of community.

Time for time out ……

Time for time out ……

I believe that creative souls need to tap out sometimes to re-inspire themselves to make new work. The beginning of this year started off with a bang and we have hardly stopped running since. Luckily for me I had the foresight last year to block off some time for personal work this year, and now it is time for an adventure around South Africa! I am so excited for the space and time to breathe, to see and to be in a moment. I am also so excited to play with my camera and shoot just for me! Here are some pics from my last mission to the Karoo, they are exactly what I need right now.
