Landi’s Horse Portraits – Ginger + Anisa

Landi’s Horse Portraits – Ginger + Anisa

Landi is a very talented photographer who loves to travel, go on grand adventures, collect precious stones, immerse herself in nature, hike up mountains and get on a horse. I should also mention that she has zero abilities in a kitchen and doesn’t plan on changing this any time soon! She is a quirky soul with a lot of feisty in her. Dynamite comes in small packages, so they say! So when those horse thieves stole her ponies they had no idea who they were messing with!

But I am going a bit fast here ……… so let me take you back a bit ……

Landi grew up on a farm outside of Bloemfontein and much of her childhood was spent galloping bareback around the fields and climbing the mountains on her cheeky horse named Ginger. These two used to wake up before the crack of dawn and head out to explore the landscape, they also loved swimming and playing in the dam. To have a life-long bond with a horse like this is rare indeed, and an absolute privilege.

Anisa was born on the farm and is now Gingers sidekick. They both adore Landi, especially when she gives them their favourite snack, brown bread!

Whilst Landi was in Cape Town recovering from an operation she got news that her two horses had disappeared off the farm. Unfortunately horses are often stolen in this area and taken into Lesotho where they are used in bush racing or as work horses. Stock theft is a common problem and most people don’t get their animals back. But not Landi!! This girl used every resource she had, from social media campaigns to hiring a private investigator, to offering rewards. Most people said it would be impossible to find them again but she didn’t give up!

And then ……

One day she got word that her horses had been found! And she went all the way to Lesotho to fetch them!

We made these horse portraits not long after they returned to the farm as a celebration of their lives together in the place they all love. These are my favorites.

You can read more about their story here

Landi thanks for such a memorable time, I so enjoyed meeting Ginger + Anisa and I look forward to visiting again.

Self Care Creativity Challenge

Self Care Creativity Challenge

Self-care conjures up images of spas, bubble baths and candles! It can be seen as somewhat indulgent but self-care is actually one of the most important habits to nurture, because when our chips are down we can serve no one! If you don’t prioritize your physical, emotional and mental well being who will?

There are some people who are masters at self care and disciplined with a capital D but for most of us we’re on a yoyo. One minute we are looking after ourselves, and the next we are falling off the yoga mat and eating all the cake. That’s me anyway!

It’s soooooo easy to get out of the habit of making healthy lifestyle choices that will serve our long-term energy levels, especially when we are already frazzled. I know that when I am sad or stressed it feels so much easier to go for short term fixes and instant gratification as opposed to going for that run. Our brain tends to choose what is easy, safe and requires the least energy. It loves to trick us into staying on the couch!

Top-South-African-Creative-Family-Portrait-Photographer-Jacki-Bruniquel

As photographers it is vital that we are physically fit and well as we are literally using our bodies to make a living! We also want to be mentally and emotionally healthy as well because we are dealing with people all the time, and running a business is stressful!!!
Most of us tend to prioritize getting the work done instead of making sure we can keep doing the work at optimum power. This doesn’t help our energy levels in the long term and if we keep abusing our bodies burn out is a serious risk. Trust me, I’ve been there and it takes a very long time to bounce back!

We need to keep filling that creative cup to stay inspired but when the editing pile is sky high this is often neglected. The result of not actively doing things to inspire is that we can start repetitively making the same old boring stuff!

I’ve had a crazy year and I’m feeling shattered. I want to be on tip top form for December season and I definitely want to end this year off on a high note so I’m doing this challenge to up my energy levels and fill my creative cup. I am inviting you to join me because I love to help people and quite frankly you will be holding me accountable!

Photography Expos = Connection

Photography Expos = Connection

You would think that the main reason for going to a photography conference or expo is to learn about new techniques or gear, but one of the most wonderful by products is that you get to CONNECT with other people in the industry.

Top-South-African-Creative-Family-Portrait-Photographer-Jacki-Bruniquel

So often photographers are working solo and stuck behind a computer editing when not shooting. Expos and conferences offer us a great opportunity to meet other photographers and suppliers. Face to face contact is so vital these days. I love meeting all the people that I “know” online and catching up with those I have already met.

Over the course of the last year I have spoken at 3 photography conferences/ expos. The first was the Fearless Photographers Conference, which happens in Europe once a year. The next was the Photo and Video Experience in Kyalami Joburg and the last the Photo Fair Africa in Durban.

Be Present

Be Present

What makes your mind stop jabbering and has your heart racing??

For me ……

It’s galloping on a horse, wind whirling through my ears, hot muscles carrying me like thundering wings.

Jacki-Bruniquel-Be-Present-002

It’s gently flowing on my yoga mat, in touch with heart whilst the sweet smell of incense tendrils soothes my soul.

It’s gliding through salty liquid glass on my surfboard like a dolphin. Connected.. Cool, Glistening.

Jacki-Bruniquel-Be-Present-003

It’s transcending into hyper focus through the cameras’ view-finder to seek out the light, watch for moments and search for composition.

Jacki-Bruniquel-Be-Present-001

I call these moving meditations and this is when time stops.

For some people time stops at the top of a mountain or the beauty of the moment when the sun disappears on the horizon. For some it’s in the giggle of a babies cherub lips and for others it’s at the bottom of a bungee jump.

Magic is always found in the moment and yet we are so often caught up in our mind. Caught up in the past, caught up in the future. Caught up in our fears. Caught up in why we can’t, shouldn’t, haven’t, won’t, mustn’t.When we stop being in the moment fear creeps in. Maybe I will fall off? Maybe I am not good enough? Maybe I should be doing something else? What if they wont like it?

If you want to improve your photography it is so vital to find the space in your life where you can connect with your heart, connect with moment and suspend fear.

This is where you will find what your soul has to give you. This is your special something that only you can express. This is your magic. This is what will separate you from the world.

Recent Family Portraits

Recent Family Portraits

In the space of a year our dog dropped dead unexpectedly from a freak disease and then one of my very close friends from university passed away after a 11 month battle with cancer. Both of these losses affected me deeply but also reminded me that death is a part of life and that we will all die one day. If you have lost someone dear I am sure you were exactly like me and found yourself picking up the phone or going through old albums to find pictures of your loved one.

This really made me realize the value of taking someone’s portrait. When Panther Bear, our dog died, I found out too late that we have pretty much no photos of him and I together, and that made me really sad. On the flip side I was lucky enough to have time with Kirst before she passed and was able to make some beautiful images of her. These are treasures now. We actually printed them to give to her friends after she passed.

This made me want to go out and photograph everyone, and I have found myself photographing waaaaay more portraits than I ever have before. I believe that in order to live a happy life we need to understand our why. I know that my portraits are treasures, art pieces, moments in time encapsulating a feeling that can be revisited after the fact, they are transcendent and that gives me a sense of purpose.

If you are from Jozi and would like to be photographed by me I am coming up to your land in the first week of November and have two slots free for a family portrait session, a couple session or a pack portrait session.

Here are some examples of new family portraits I have made recently.
