Top 100 Fearless Photographers 2019

Top 100 Fearless Photographers 2019

A friend of mine sent me a message yesterday with some pretty incredible news!

I made the top 100 wedding Fearless Photographers in the world for 2019!

Alot can change in 10 years. 10 years ago I had just started my fledgling career as a wedding photographer. My pictures were rather average to say the least, in fact often they were terrible but I kept moving forward. My aim right back then was to be of an international standard.

I remember when I first discovered Fearless Photographers and how in awe I was of the artistry and pure talent that was featured on this platform. I didn’t think it would be possible for me to win an award, let alone be placed on any of their lists, but I used this platform as a benchmark for what is possible and pushed myself to grow, learn and be inspired.

Does that make me think I am AMAZING – nope. I am always trying to be a better photographer and a better human. Sometimes I fail – sometimes I win. It’s all a journey.

I do believe that we can do most things if we put our minds to it.

Thank you to Huy Fear Less Nguyen for the reminder!

What would you like to achieve in the next decade??

If you would like to jumpstart your photography career and learn to take photos of an international standard I am running two in person creative photography workshops this year.

One in March in Durban on the 17th and 18th of March 2020 and another in Jozi (DTBD).

How To Stay Inspired

How To Stay Inspired

If you’re a wedding photographer who only looks at wedding photography, your work is probably boring.

Harsh

I know!

If you’re guilty of this and I am pushing your buttons I apologise. I don’t want to rile you, I want to get you out of your rut!

Jacki-Bruniquel-How-To-Stay-Inspired-001

The fact of the matter is, if your work isn’t distinctive you’re always going to be competing on price!

There are so many photographers out there these days.

You need to stand out in order to be noticed.

Humans are so bombarded with imagery these days, it’s going to take something exceptional to make people stop and really look at your work.

Otherwise it will just come down to money.

Creativity needs to be nurtured and if you want to create exciting work and stay inspired you need to make time for this.

Jacki-Bruniquel-How-To-Stay-Inspired-004

  • Go to art galleries and look at work that is not of your genre
  • Go to bookshops and look at the art and photography section
  • Watch films and study how cinematographers use composition, light and colour
  • Hang out with interesting people who inspire you
  • Journal
  • Carry a book with you to scribble down ideas
  • Write lists of your favourite photographers and figure out why you love them
  • Drink in all the beautiful imagery that you possibly can
  • Diarise time in your schedule to inspire yourself – this is as much of a priority as eating properly

Jacki-Bruniquel-How-To-Stay-Inspired-003

  • Get enough sleep
  • Eat properly – A healthy body is a healthy mind
  • Meditate – this has been proven to improve stress, anxiety, EQ, creativity, empathy. If you battle you can use an app like Calm or Insight timer.
  • Get off your phone – Give yourself the time and space to day-dream. It has been proven that allowing your mind to wonder whilst walking or doing the ironing actually improves creativity. If you’re always on your phone whilst doing other things your brain doesn’t have the chance to access your creative ideas.
  • Exercise increases serotonin and endorphins, which improves mental help which will ultimately improve mind-set which will help you with negative thought patterns.
  • Read books
  • Shoot for free! In other words don’t only make work for clients. This is where you can play, experiment and grow.
  • If you’re feeling burnt out and uninspired take the day off, or even better take the weekend off, or better yet take a couple of weeks off. You only live once and having time and space away from your normal life will enable you to put things into perspective and hopefully inspire your creative heart.

Be more present. Be more curious. Stop and smell the roses. The magic is always found in the moment!

Stop making excuses and just do it! You start by stilling the mind and then putting one foot in front of the other!

Story of a rescue kitten

Story of a rescue kitten

She passed me her phone and said take a look at this kitten Zamani has found. What I saw on the screen was a sad little fluff that couldn’t have been be more than just a few days old and I knew in my heart that if I didn’t do anything the chances of it surviving were slim.

But here’s the back-story.

My good friend Germaine has been sponsoring Zamani to go to school in Ndwedwe and Zamani rescued a very newborn orphan kitten. Knowing that Germaine is an animal lover, he reached out to her for advice. Keep it warm and see if it will eat something soft she said.

I could see that the little thing was too new to eat anything, as kittens under the age of four weeks only drink milk so I started calling friends to see what could be done. The problem was that I was up in Joburg for work and the kitten was in a rural area of KZN.

The photo of that helpless little creature drove me to take action.

I decided to ask my partner Riaan if he could go and fetch the kitten. It was a Thursday afternoon when I made the phone call and I really didn’t expect him to say yes as he was on a deadline with worl but he did so reluctantly. I then called my neighbor the vet aka Kerry the Animal Angel and asked her to go and take a look when Riaan returned.

After a long drive along dusty roads, Riaan and Zamani managed to find each other via a whatsapp pin drop, and the kitten mewed the whole way back to Ballito. I know this as I got a number of voice notes of screaming, unhappy kitten sounds from Riaan over the next hour or so! Kerry came over with a newborn kitten bottle and some formula and taught Riaan how to wipe the kittens nether regions to get it to poop and pee after every feed. He was not impressed with this newfound knowledge and task! The kitten drank the whole bottle and fell asleep in his warm nest and didn’t wake up till the next morning.

I drove back to Ballito the next day and hatched a plan to foster the kitten until it was old enough to go to a loving home with a little girl to play with. You see I also had plans to stay pet free so that I can pick up and go. My plan was to travel more in 2020, go back to Bali to run a workshop, spend a few months in India and travel more in South Africa as I typically do with work. These things are not really pet friendly despite me loving animals so much.

I must also tell you that my good friend had literally just passed away after a battle with cancer, and I was broken inside. I had no idea at this stage that this little kitten was actually rescuing me as much as I was rescuing him! I did all the things that kitten Moms do. Woke up every four hours in the night to feed him, I wiped his butt and sterilised bottles. He slept on my chest and up my sleeve and he purred every time I picked him up. I fell deeply in love with him and chances of me realistically giving him away became rather slim. He has been a gift in a time where I needed healing. And so I have decided to train him to be an adventure cat!

What is an adventure cat you ask? Just google it or put #adventurecat into Instagram! Essentially, if you have the cat with the right temperament you can train him to go everywhere with you, walk on a lead, go on holiday and take a hike with you. So this is what Yoda Baggins and I are doing!

In this post you will find some photos of his first adventure down to Swell Eco Lodge on the Wildcoast. People have said it will be impossible to train him to walk on a lead but we are doing it!

Who knows what will happen in the future but Yoda Baggins has brought so much joy, laughter and love during a tough time and brought out my inner crazy cat lady. He’s staying!!!

Part Two coming soon

PS For those of you who love photography all of these images were shot with a Fuji XT2. I just love this camera!

A lesson from Kirsty

A lesson from Kirsty

Monday the 3rd of June was a sunset I will never forget! The sun hung in the air like a giant red orb swaddled in a dusty blanket.

Top-South-African-Creative-Family-Portrait-Photographer-Jacki-Bruniquel

We were traveling to Jozi for my creative photography workshop and my GPS had taken us on the totally wrong track. This was the third in a trio of giant mishaps, that happened on that trip, which included my clutch going and nearly running out of petrol after the clutch panic. I was stressed out of my eyeballs. The anxiety pulsed through my veins as I worried that we were going to break down and/or land up in a dodgy area. One minute we were near Fourways and the next we were on a dirt road that was a highway still under construction. It all didn’t seem right! It wasn’t right! The GPS lady had us totally off path. Things felt sketchy! It had been a day of sketchy!

And then there was a moment where I looked over at the sun and my soul recognised how delightfully mad it is to be a human. I saw how my brain had me all stressed and in a total state of worry but just outside of my windscreen was the sun in all its beautiful glory. For just a few seconds my mind totally stopped with its chattering and I took it all in – the irony of the human experience versus the beauty of the world that is always there for us to witness.

We eventually arrived safe and sound at my good friends house and after a large glass of wine I picked up my phone and read that my good friend Kirsty had passed away at sunset. She was literally passing over as I was looking at that giant red orb.

I feel like that moment was a message to me directly from her. She always knew how to live, but her life wasn’t always smooth sailing.

  • Lie on the ground and look up at the stars she often said!
  • Look at the light through the leaves she reminded me.
  • Dance in the kitchen.
  • Swim whenever you can and skinny dip in the middle of the day just because.
  • Drink champagne in a crystal glass and tea from a china tea cup.
  • Look at the beauty around you and invite it into all aspects of your life.

That’s how she lived.

Life is crazy. The human experience can be hard. But looking around is a delight.

Oh and! And don’t forget to watch the sunset.

The Art of Seeing

The Art of Seeing

People always ask me how I get such great reflection shots so I will let you into a little secret! It’s got something to do with opening your eyes and seeing what is right in front of you!

But let me tell you a story first

I’m was in the market for a new car and I saw a Honda on the road the other day that I had never noticed before and now I am seeing them EVERYWHERE!

I remember when my sister was pregnant, suddenly I was seeing pregnant people EVERYWHERE

Or when I got engaged and suddenly all I could see was engagement rings EVERYWHERE. (That relationship didn’t work out by the way, just in case you were wondering why I’m not wearing a ring now!)

When the brain is aware of something we notice them. It’s not like those things weren’t happening around me all of the time – I just never took note of them and so I didn’t see them!

In order to be a good photographer you really need to NOTICE things and this happens by being aware of them, being present, mindful and opening your eyes to the world around you! Even when you don’t have the camera on you, you should be watching the light and the way it behaves, seeing compositions or studying people to watch for emotion and moments. When your brain is aware of things you will improve your eye and therefore be able to react quicker when you have your camera in hand. This is called the art of seeing and it is something you should be working on all the time if you want to be a better photographer!
