Portraits of Jo

Jo has led an inspiring life, woven with vibrant threads that create the rich tapestry of her story. Just like the beautiful fabrics she’s collected from around the world, her journey is diverse and colourful. She spent significant time traveling through Central America in her youth and has tales of mining for opals, living on the shores of Lake Atitlán, and discovering embroidered treasures from local Mayan women. Like a magpie drawn to shiny things, Jo has a love for gemstones and became a jewellery designer who seeks materials from far and wide to craft her exquisite pieces.

She is a creative spirit with an eye for beauty who also creates it. She’s a spiritual seeker, a businesswoman, a mother, and a treasured member of her community. I find her truly fascinating. When we first discussed her portrait session, I knew I wanted to capture an image that reflected her travels as well as the quirky aspects of her personality. Jo isn’t one for flimsy high heels; she’s more of a dusty boots and barefoot gal. She mentioned feeling awkward in front of the camera and that she hates it—something I’ve heard many times before. But honestly, she was a dream to photograph, and I think the results reflect her vibrant essence!

She’s a Rainbow – Fashion Photo Library

“She’s a Rainbow” is a whimsical fashion startup based in Johannesburg, South Africa, dedicated to celebrating individuality and self-expression through colorful, chic designs which invite you to embrace your playful femininity. The brand specializes in handmade heirloom clothing and accessories for women, crafted from 100% Liberty cottons and Italian silks. “She’s a Rainbow” offers enchanting styles adorned with pretty patterns. Each piece not only looks delightful but also feels good to wear.”She’s a Rainbow” pieces are ideal for twirling in the sunshine, sipping cappuccinos in the piazza and wearing to picnics in Capri or that special wedding in Cape Town.

When the creator of this startup came to me with her ideas and shared her dream of creating a shoot that encompassed the brand, I was delighted. Visual storytelling is my game! We chatted at length about the feeling she wanted to create with the imagery, and we planned a shoot to launch her brand and build a content library for her socials, website, and PR ventures.

High-quality photographs are crucial in establishing a brand’s identity and connecting with its audience. They not only showcase the products but also convey the essence and values of the brand. Effective visuals create an immediate impact, capturing attention and evoking emotion, which is essential in a crowded market. This imagery helps communicate the brand’s story, making it relatable and memorable. By investing in compelling photography, we ensured that her vision resonates powerfully with potential customers and elevates the brand’s presence in the fashion landscape.

Huge thanks to everyone from She’s a rainbow for trusting me and to all the people who made this shoot come to life. It is so inspiring to create something out of nothing and I have huge respect for anyone who follows their creative dreams! You are a phenomenal woman Sarah!

Portraits of Nikki

Portraits of Nikki

Last year, Nikki reached out to me at a pivotal moment in her life—she was on the tail end of her journey with breast cancer and wanted to document this transformative experience through portraits. The whirlwind of her treatment had made it feel almost unreal, and she expressed a deep need for tangible evidence of her existence and humanity. More than anything, Nikki wanted to see herself from a different perspective and immortalize her story. Her desire to reflect on her journey was both poignant and inspiring.

We first met at her home in Kommetjie, where we drank sparkling water on her balcony while watching surfers catch slippery waves just a stone’s throw away. As is my practice, I took time to get to know her before picking up my camera. Like most challenges, her journey was not entirely linear. After her diagnosis, she underwent a mastectomy, extensive chemotherapy, and breast reconstructive surgery. The months of recovery were challenging, but today, she’s back to climbing rock faces.

Despite the pain she has endured, she embodies strength and resolve, determined to live her life on her own terms. Nikki is not only a survivor but also a doctor, climber, surfer, mother, yachtswoman, creative writer, traveler, and adventurer.

It quickly became clear that we needed to capture Nikki in nature, specifically in two of her beloved worlds: water and rock. After discussing several location options, we settled on the Cederberg—a place close to her heart and a backdrop where she has spent countless hours rock climbing.

This was my first visit to the Cederberg, and I was blown away by its surreal, Salvador Dali-like orange-red rock formations. But more than the scenery, I was moved by Nikki’s incredible spirit, strength, vulnerability, and bravery. During our shoot, her hair was just beginning to grow back, and while her “chemo curls” were fading, the scars remained. I aimed to capture the essence of her soul and the resilience that she embodies.

As I reflect on our time together, I am reminded of the healing power of storytelling through photography and the importance of feeling seen. Photography transcends mere visuals; it captures the emotions and experiences that define our lives. It allows us to confront our journeys and document our growth, offering a tangible representation of our life. In this intimate portrait process, we can reclaim our narratives. We celebrated Nikki’s journey, creating a space for her to acknowledge her triumphs and transformations.

I’m truly honored that Nikki trusted me to create this series and admire Nikki’s bravery for allowing me to share these images; I hope they inspire other women facing similar battles to see that there is always hope.

How to unboring your wedding pics?

How to unboring your wedding pics?

I recently gave a lecture to a group of 30 odd photographers on behalf of Nikon on “How to unboring your wedding Photography” and one of the questions I asked the audience was “What is it about wedding photography that makes you love it?”

I believe that in order to make authentic images we need to turn inward to discover what we really love and what we are drawn to instead of blindly copying trends or trying to do what everyone else is doing. If we know what we like and why, then we can apply these to our own work and use it as a map or a guide. If we keep coming back to this map we can create our own path instead of looking at everyone else and following the status quo which aside from being boring, can be an endless cycle.

I studied Fine Art and this has become a guide for me as it is important for me that I make images that have meaning behind them. I love to tell stories with my camera and also create new stories every time I shoot. It would kill me to keep making the same images over and over and have a repertoire of shots that I reproduce in every album. I also love to people watch and so I love taking unscripted documentary images of people doing all the weird and wonderful things that they do at weddings. I draw much of my inspiration from my clients. Weddings offer me the opportunity to take creative portraits, tell stories with my camera and also capture moments like a photo journalist. This is why I love photographing weddings and I use this as a map every time I shoot. This is also why my clients come to me!

Huge thanks to everyone who came along to my chat! So good to meet you all!!!

Why I take time to push my creative boundaries.

Why I take time to push my creative boundaries.

Are you a photographer who is feeling in a rut? Do you feel stagnant or bored with what you are doing? There are many ways to solve this and one of them is to push your creative boundaries. This is always scary at first but as they say, you only grow when you are out of your comfort zone!

In the past 8 days I have done 5 styled shoots. Anyone who has ever been involved in a styled shoot will know that this is complete madness! But there is method in my madness.

For those of you who are unclear about what a styled shoot is, the name is self-explanatory. Simply put, it is a shoot that is styled. These kinds of shoots always start off with brain storming sessions and a lot of research. A theme is picked and then outfits, location, colours, hair, make up and props, etc are all co-ordinated to tell that themed story. Generally there are a number of creative people involved, which means collaboration and a LOT of organization!

Why do I do styled shoots?

I am a curious photographer and an artist. I like to push myself, I like to explore, I like adventure and I like to create. I cannot do this if I just sit around making the same old work over and over again. I also love working with people. When shooting weddings, I am often left alone to make creative choices and this can sometimes be lonely. I love collaborating with other creative folk to make beautiful pictures. This process is nurturing for me, and I always learn so much and land up doing far more than I ever dreamt of. I also get to experiment with techniques that I wouldn’t necessarily try out at a wedding, especially not for the first time! I have found that if I don’t take time out in my schedule to do creative work I land up stagnating and I don’t push myself to learn more technically. I also know that if I am constantly producing creative work I will find clients who like creative photography and those are the people I love to work with!!!!

Recently I have been on a mission to learn more about light and posing. I have been playing with these two elements to communicate certain emotions and feelings, but also to make my clients look gorgeous! These are the factors I have really pushed in these shoots.

I would like to thank Charelle who has done make up for most of these shoots, Drew Christie who has done both hair and styling, and Carolyn McNeil who has done styling and flowers. Huge thanks also to Tracey Laubscher from Olivelli Durban for lending us the two gorgeous black wedding dresses. To Richard Chennells and Peter Engblom from The George Hotel in Eshowe, you have been so generous and we so appreciate it! Thanks to Sven from Davida for opening your shop for us and for being so incredibly patient. It has been a dream working with all of you talented folk! You all rock! I will be posting each shoot once they are all edited and will then go into detail about all the collaborators.

Last but certainly not least I need to thank my amazing clients. Everyone you see here came to me for an engagement shoot or a portrait session and didn’t quite know what hit them when the giant production unfolded. Thanks for running with our ideas and for being so wonderful!

PS The fifth shoot is top secret as the client bought the portrait session I auctioned off for Jess Nicholson and doesn’t want it blogged.
