Love in the Theatre – Martha + Sbu's engagement shoot

Love in the Theatre – Martha + Sbu's engagement shoot

When Martha and Sbu’s eyes met across a crowded nightclub their souls must have recognised something in each other that was more than just smoldering good looks. That fateful night marked the beginning of a love  that has lasted despite long distances. A love that is rooted in a  deep connection, a love that is going to be rooted in a marriage.

Martha and Sbu are both in medicine and they both work in hospitals. Martha is a pharmacist  in Canada while Sbu is a Doctor in Durban.

It seemed obvious to me that their engagement shoot had to be done in a hospital.

Thanks to both of you for trusting my vision!

Goan Engagement Shoot – Raj and Parrot Entangled in India – Tash + Neil

Goan Engagement Shoot – Raj and Parrot Entangled in India – Tash + Neil

This is the engagement story of two of my most favorite humans on this planet.

Tash is my wonderful assistant and friend. A women who I love, admire and respect for being such a special person. She is always laughing, always smiling always caring.

We went out to India to photograph the wedding of Shane and Laurie and took a few extra days to explore Goa. Her long time boyfriend decided to come out to join us. One day whilst Neil and I were swimming in the warm calm Indian ocean on Palolem beach he told me that he had brought along a ring destined for Tash’s left hand. It took him a few days to actually pop the question (which was rather hard for me as I am not good at keeping secrets!) And when he did, he did it on a pretty Goan beach at sunset. I have never seen a bigger smile nor a happier face. Tash was literally walking on air!

You may ask why I have entitled this blogpost Raj and Parrot Entangled in India. Well .. I have nicknames for most of the people who I adore. Before arriving in India Tash had her hair dyed purple, turquoise and black. The Indian folk just loved her. Wherever we went we heard people saying (Please imagine this with Indian accent and head wobble at the end) I really really like your hair you look like a (insert either one of these birds) peacock, kingfisher, parrot. Parrot just stuck. Tash’s hairdresser would make a bloody killing in India. As for Raj … well Neil looks like a Bollywood actor and does such a fine rendition of one It just stuck. As for the entangled bit …. well ….. they are rather fond of each other!!!!

Love you both …… And yes I will be shooting their wedding!

Cape St Francis Engagement Shoot – Kat + Garrick

Cape St Francis Engagement Shoot – Kat + Garrick

I have always felt like my soul has had a good scrub after a few days in Cape St Francis. It’s my special place, my soul place .. the place with the unique fynbos smell that sends my mind, body and spirit into instant relax mode. Cape St Francis also known as Seal Point also happens to be one of my favorite waves in the world. So …. when Garrick contacted me about shooting their wedding in PE my mind immediately thought about the fact that PE is just an hour away from Seals and that I would naturally have to extend my stay by a day or two. Then I discovered that Garrick is a surfer and that he asked Kat to marry him in St Francis Bay and that was that! Kat and Garrick’s engagement shoot just had to be done there. I have always wanted to do a portrait shoot down in that part of the world and they were the perfect couple for it.

Thanks to the two of you for being the perfect couple for this shoot!!! (that is really the highest compliment from me by the way) We loved our time with you and we loved our time in Seals! Happy Honeymooning!

PS If you are looking for a well priced place to stay in Seals contact Hilary on 083 216 47 44  www.wheretostay.co.za/sandown Their self catering flats have a great view and are a stone throw from the beach.

September = taking the time to push my boundaries ie Giving a speech at the South African Wedding Photographers Association party in CT on the 8th.

September = taking the time to push my boundaries ie Giving a speech at the South African Wedding Photographers Association party in CT on the 8th.

I know I made quite a few brides unhappy when I decided to take this September off weddings to push my boundaries and work on personal projects. I was beginning to  feel like my work was stagnating so instead of sitting around talking about all the things I would like to do, I made the time to do them. It’s not that I don’t enjoy shooting weddings, they are just so time consuming that they seem to take over every free second of my life and it’s therefore easy to become a bit lazy and fall into ruts. If you are really busy and working all the time  its often easier to take the safe route rather than being a bit fearless and going for gold! I think it is vital to take time out to throw yourself out of your comfort zone and to learn, study and grow. I had originally planned to work on some fine art projects but I decided to do something different and push myself technically which is always scary as I am not naturally a technical person. So I am going balls to the wall and playing with lighting, working on conceptual shoots and collaborating with stylists.

Do you feel like you are stuck in a rut, do you spend time talking about doing things rather then doing them, is your work starting to bore you, do you feel a bit lost????? Well then I encourage you to take the first step and JUST DO IT!!! No excuses. Once you start shooting for yourself its bloody amazing how your internal energy shifts. I know not everyone has the luxury of taking a month off to do this sort of thing. I have worked hard for this and sacrificed alot to do this but I know that this time will bring great things for me and my little business. If you cannot take time off … what about just doing that project that you keep talking about? It feels good , I promise!

The funny thing about making a decision is that the universe all of a sudden opens up the flood gates.

Not too long ago I received an email from Ian Mitchinson asking me to give an inspirational talk at the South African Wedding Photographers Association party on the 8th of September. Now that is seriously throwing me out of my comfort zone!!! Last year 2 of South Africa’s top top wedding photographers Jean Pierre Uys and Christine Meintjes were the guest speakers!!!! Apparently all the who’s who of wedding photography will be there so its all rather daunting but as I said … throwing yourself into uncomfortable situations pretty much always leads to growth. I have booked tickets and will be there with bells on.

I am going to be talking about

Using self introspection to develop and maintain a unique visual language in amongst all the noise of social media which surrounds us. I will share 2 basic techniques of visual methodology which I learnt during my Fine Art Degree and am now applying to wedding photography.

The party is going to be held at the Zulu Bar on Long Street starting at 7pm. Besides being a great networking evening, The Rudimentals will be playing and there are some fabulous prizes to be won (ie tickets to see Kings of Leon etc etc) Click here to find out more. Please do come say hi to me. Looking forward to meeting you all!!!!!

PS The lovely Jules Morgan will also be talking along with DuWayne and Custo Photography.
