SpiritFest – A Yoga, Dance and Music festival

SpiritFest – A Yoga, Dance and Music festival

Festivals can sometimes have the reputation as being debaucherous affairs frequented by folk who love to party. It would also be fair to say that most of them entail camping, music and dirty feet! SpiritFest involved all of the latter, but none of the former. It is a festival where alcohol and any other mind-altering substances are not welcome, but open hearts and kindness are a requirement. If you have never heard of SpiritFest I will fill you in. It is a yoga, music and dance festival, which happened this year on the banks of the Citrusdal River.

The festival was spread over four days and sported a jam-packed schedule of yoga classes, dance sessions, talks, guided meditations, music performances and DJ’s. It is worth noting that SpiritFest is a child friendly event and they had a whole schedule organised for little ones. It is also a meat free event and there were lots of food stalls offering delicious vegetarian meals to satisfy one’s hunger. For those who like to shop there was a market of varied and interesting goodies to buy.

There was so much going on that it was impossible to attend everything, and the weather was absolutely gorgeous so dips in the cool river and taking the time to sunbathe on its banks under the majestic mountains were a welcome distraction. The yoga classes ranged from Kundalini and Forest Yoga, to Hatha, Vinyassa, Iyenga and Acro Yoga and it was fabulous to try so many different styles and teachers. I love doing yoga to music and there was a yoga DJ at every class I attended. Another highlight for me were the dance sessions. Again these ranged from a spirited NIA class to 5 Rhythms Dancing to free dancing sessions with DJ Epple-Sauce, which my sister nicknamed the “sober rave time”. One minute there would be a class of 100 people doing yoga, and the next the marque would be transformed into a rocking dance floor which had everyone flocking in for a quick sober jam and a whole load of fun!

My best part of SpiritFest however was spending quality time with my sister who lives in Cape Town! We were also fortunate to hang with some other special friends who I just don’t see enough of. You know who you are !!! It was a soulful, bonding time that lifted my spirit and inspired every cell, which was exactly what I needed!

Huge thanks to the organisers and everyone involved for your vision, energy and the enormous effort in putting this together. You have given everyone who attended an incredible gift. I can’t wait for next year’s event!!! If you are interested you can join their Facebook page here. SpiritFest is also on Instagram @spiritfestafrica

PS As I am usually the one behind the camera I so seldom feature in photos and I know Lisa is probably going to hate this pic below but I think our facial expressions really are telling of how blissed out we were at the end of it all. Thanks Lis for the best time!!! Love you

PPS For those that are interested in photography. I shot all of these pics on the mirrorless Fuji XT2 which I was fortunate enough to win at the Admired in Africa Awards 2016. At the moment I only have the kit lens it came with. It’s a fabulous camera for documentary work. It’s super light, compact and unobtrusive and I love the flip up screen and the fact that what you see is what you get. The focusing is also way faster on the XT2 as it is on the XT1. I still need to spend more time to become better friends with this little machine but we are slowly getting there!

Creative Family Photography in Durban

Creative Family Photography in Durban

People often ask me why I don’t publish family pics on my blog and my answer is simply that weddings are my speciality and when I am crazy busy with weddings I don’t have much time for other work. However I often do maternity and family shoots for previous wedding clients which I love, as it is so special for me to keep in contact and capture the important milestones of peoples lives.

If you follow me on social media you will know that we are in the middle of a massive house refurb at the moment and my gosh building is expensive! I have therefore opened up my diary over the school holidays and will be taking on a limited number of family portraits sessions on my 2016 prices. The same will go for individual portrait shoots or couple shoots. So if you have been keen on working with me but needed an excuse – drop me a mail on jacki@jackibruniquel.com and I will send through some info.

Best Wedding Pics of 2016

Best Wedding Pics of 2016

2016 sure has thrown some challenges at me but there have also been some wonderful moments and blessings to celebrate!

First off is that I have had a couple of very big affirmations from the international wedding photography community. This year I was placed on the Fearless Photographers top 100 photographers of all time. The calibre of photographers on this list is astounding so this really was an incredible piece of news. Next up was being placed on the SLR top 150 international wedding photographers of 2016 and lastly but certainly not least was winning the Admired in Africa top wedding photographer of 2016! The prize with this feather in my cap was a camera I have been lusting for! I won a Fuji XT2 mirrorless which I am absolutely delighted with. Golly I feel very lucky and this certainly makes all the hard work and long hours worth it.

One of the biggest blessings of 2016 however is the fact that I have had such a wonderful bunch of clients over the past year. Wedding photography has taken me all over the country and in fact the world, but the thing that keeps me keeping on is that I am constantly meeting dynamic and interesting people who inspire me to tell their stories. Huge thanks to all of my clients for entrusting me with your memories and for looking after us so well.

I must also thank all the other wedding suppliers who we have worked alongside this year. We have had alot of laughs over this big bad crazy 2016th of a year! Thank you for all your help and friendship!

Lastly I am extending a huge thank you to my assistant Liz. She has been there for me through thick and thin this year and there are no words to adequately describe how deeply I appreciate all her hard work, loyalty and boundless energy! Liz you rock and I am so lucky to have you in my life.

Here’s to a 2017 full of abundance, joy, experience, beauty and peace.

Mdumbi Portraits – Before and After

Mdumbi Portraits – Before and After

My sister has a guest lodge called Swell Eco Lodge Wild Coast which is situated in Mdumbi in the Transkei. About 5 years ago I spent some down time there taking portraits of the locals. We went to visit her last week and before we went down I printed out all the pics I had taken so many years before. One afternoon we went on a mission to find all the people in the images and give them their photo.I have included the before and after pics in this series, it quite amazing to see how faces change through the years and how some don’t change at all!

Thanks to Riaan for being flash bitch 🙂

Afrika Burn, Dust Storms and the Outex

Afrika Burn, Dust Storms and the Outex

Last week I published my favorite photos from my Afrika Burn experience. I also asked the question: “Who wouldn’t want to go to a giant dress up party where people ride unicorns and dance under a blanket of Karoo stars?” Afrika Burn is absolutely magical, there is no question about that, but even though you are encouraged to don your tiara’s, it is not a place for princesses.

The desert is an incredibly hostile environment. Boiling hot in the day, and extremely cold at night. There is no electricity or running water, and if you are a bit iffy about camping, porta loos or long drops, and insist on a 5 star ablutions and bidets, then Afrika Burn might not be for you!

From a photography point of view the desert is dust central, which is not exactly an ideal environment for a camera, especially expensive professional cameras like a Nikon D4. I was really worried about taking my gear to Afrika Burn as I rely on my camera for income!

I found a great solution though, which I will share with you.

I have always wanted to start working underwater with my camera, and so I did a shoot with Ilse Moore a while back. Ilse is without a doubt South Africa’s top underwater portrait and art photographer, and suggested I check out the Outex system. Not only does an outex allow one to take a camera underwater, it is a brilliant protective system which really gives a photographer the freedom to shoot in conditions that wouldn’t normally be OK for a camera. I contacted Patrick from Outex South Africa, and after a few good chats we decided that we would start working together! And the next thing you know we were fitting my new outex system and I was driving off for the desert!

I got a lot of curious  looks at my “camera condom” whilst shooting at Afrika Burn. But when that dust storm hit, I was smiling! I could go out and shoot, and feel very comfortable in the knowledge that my gear was safely protected.

When I returned home from our trip,I found dust in every crevice of every single thing I took, except for my camera!!! I felt very glad I worked with the Outex the whole time I was in the Karoo!!!

Huge thanks to Patrick for sorting me out so quickly and professionally! Click to like his facebook page here

Below you will find a pic of my Nikon D4 in it’s Outex House and a pic of me shooting at Afrika Burn. Thanks to Riaan for the pic!
