Portraits of Bhavika

Portraits of Bhavika

I met Bhavika a few years back at the Buddhist Retreat Centre in Ixopo. We got chatting over our vegetarian dinner, and I remember thinking, “This is a lady I could be friends with.”

Bhavika is an anaesthetist in Durban, and besides putting people to sleep, she has an interest in mental health and is currently setting up a clinic to help people with depression. Bhav is a deep soul with an adventurous spirit. She loves to laugh and to travel, and one of her favourite memories is walking down the streets of New York with her Burberry jacket.

We made this set of portraits in Durban on my recent visit. Our afternoon started with some very classic headshots and personal branding portraits. We then headed into the studio to create something that represented the empowered, courageous woman who has traveled all over the world. We used a carpet she bought in Turkey as a backdrop, and later I convinced her to get into the pool. She is an Aquarian and has a symbolic relationship with water, so I am glad she braved the stormy weather as the image of her floating is probably my favourite.

When I asked her why she decided to invest in this experience, she said that she is so used to being in the background, and now that she is opening the clinic, it is her time to step into the light and be seen.

If you’ve been hanging in the shadows and know deep down that it is time for you to be seen in your best light, get in touch. I would love to include you in my 40-ish & Flourishing Portrait experience. I have opened my diary up for 40 women to be a part of this over the next 12 months.

Portraits of Sharni

Portraits of Sharni

I met Sharni many years ago at a business retreat with @chanellesergeriusbruce, we clicked immediately! It’s hard not to like Sharni as she sparkles and radiates an effervescent energy which is magnetic. Sharni loves to have a deep conversation and is interested in consciousness and evolving as a human. She has dedicated herself and her business to help others live their best life and works as a speaker and coach in the wellness industry. She is also my one of my most favourite yoga teachers on the planet. We can chat for days however not long after the retreat ended she moved to Bali and our in person chats switched over to long back and forth voice notes which I call ping pong podcasts. When I was invited to speak at a conference in Berlin I decided to nip over to Bali and Sharni and I spent a month together. Our first shoot involved wading through muddy rice paddies and zooting around the islands on the back of a scooter, this session you see here was definitely more contained. Luckily for me she has moved back to Cape town for now.

We started by taking some images on the mermaid sparkly backdrop which I painted and then had some fun with my blue carpet and ended off with some classic headshots for a book she had published.

Thanks so much Jules Ruby makeup for your handwork and for pampering Sharnin like the queen that she is. And as always thanks to @profotoza for the easiest to set up lighting gear!

Portraits of Sam

Portraits of Sam

Sam is like a sister to me! We are opposites in many ways but sort of similar in others. My actual sister Lisa and I were watching the Wednesday series on Netflix one night and she joked that Sam is like Wednesday and that I am like her werewolf roommate. Sam is most definitely not morose and she is a lot lighter than the Adams family but she does love to wear black and will always defend the good. She’s fiercely independent, small, and badaas just like Wednesday. This became the inspiration for my portrait session with her, although we didn’t make her wear pigtails.

We started our session with some creative portraits and then I made her a series of branding photos for her new brand strategy program that she will be launching. It was blowing a gale that day and bucketing down with rain, so having a studio with a warm fireplace was a real blessing, as we would have had to have cancelled if I was relying on using an outdoor location.

I am so incredibly lucky to count this human as my chosen family. Love you, Samlet.

Branding Portraits for VMRC Scientists

Branding Portraits for VMRC Scientists

I have a passion for photographing women, especially those making a difference in the world. A few years ago, I collaborated with Professor Joanne Passmore on a Wishing for Wellness project, where I was tasked with creating portraits of adolescent girls while ensuring their faces were not identifiable. That was a wonderful challenge!

I was thrilled to be called in again to create a set of portraits for the VMRC scientists—this time with fewer restrictions and a strong focus on storytelling rather than just headshots.

The VMRC team consists of dedicated scientists working to advance our understanding of women’s reproductive health. Their research explores the vaginal microbiome and its crucial role in overall well-being. By addressing important medical challenges, they’re achieving real breakthroughs and changing the field for the better.

One of their standout initiatives, GIFT, aims to transform research into innovative diagnostic tests and treatments that help reduce genital inflammation. These efforts showcase their commitment to leveraging African research expertise and prioritizing women’s health across the continent. The VMRC scientists are truly dedicated to empowering women through education and advocacy, helping them make informed health choices and positively impacting their communities.

While scientists often prefer working in labs or behind computers, their careers frequently require them to be spokespeople for their research. This means developing a personal brand, attending conferences, and attracting funding. Strong imagery is essential for presenting themselves effectively.

Before I picked up my camera, I interviewed each scientist to learn about their backgrounds, their work, and how they want to be portrayed. Over two days, we created a library of images that truly reflect their personalities.

Here are a couple of testimonials from these inspirational women:

“Looking at the images from my branding session with Jacki definitely boosted my confidence and energy. This has significantly improved my self-perception, fostering a greater sense of self-assurance. Overall, Jacki’s work as a photographer is exceptional; her talent and skills shine through in every shot. What sets her apart is not just her photography but also the personal connection she establishes with her clients, creating a comfortable and relaxed atmosphere. I wholeheartedly recommend her for any occasion—she’s truly the best choice!”

— Ramla Tanko, PhD
Scientist, Division of Medical Virology, Department of Pathology

“I felt nervous to be in front of the camera, but before Jacki even starts a branding session, she takes the time to know you. On the shoot day, she has a magical way of putting you at ease. She really knows how to bring out the smiles, and this shines through in the photos. We don’t always believe we are beautiful, but somehow Jacki captures authentic beauty in each subject. This is her true gift; she photographs from the inside. I call her a sorcerer!”

Scientist, Senior Research Officer
